Google’s Project Loon was unveiled in 2013 as an ambitious project to bring internet to some of the most remote parts of the world where it’s hard to get Internet access. The project’s still in full swing and you’re now able to track the balloons in real time as they travel the world. BhoXxEECUAApg0D Track Googles Project Loon Internet balloons in real time as they travel the world The helium balloons can now be tracked in real time using Flightradar24′s service, which shows a group of them being launched near Timaru, New Zealand and drifting out to sea at around 162 feet off the surface. The balloons are moving quite quickly at a rate of around 41 kilometers an hour at time of writing.

Google’s page for Project Loon shows that the balloons should keep drifting east towards South America as part of a plan to establish internet connectivity along the 40th Southern Parallel.

flightpath jul1 c2 Track Googles Project Loon Internet balloons in real time as they travel the world A previous balloon that was part of the project managed to travel past South America in just 12 days, so it’ll be interesting to track this new set of balloons in real time as they complete their journey across the Pacific Ocean.

The balloons are made to last over 100 days, so it looks like the travels of this group has only just begun.

oscar 786x305 520x245 New Twitter card lets you vote for your Oscar favorites

Twitter added a new type of card to its growing platform overnight that allows users to vote on their favorite nominees, just in time for the Oscars award ceremony next week.

tweets New Twitter card lets you vote for your Oscar favorites

Dick Costolo, Twitter’s CEO showed off the new card which is being used by E! Online to get votes on which female actress users are predicting to win Best Female Actress at the awards on Monday. The new survey card only works on mobile and doesn’t appear using the web interface yet.

Using the card is as simple as tapping on the user’s choice to vote. Once the actress has been picked by the user, the card reloads and shows who is leading the pack right now. This new type of card is likely to be used heavily on Monday as many news organizations live tweet the Oscars and seek to engage their fans more.

The new card is provided by Poptip, a company that touts “accurate social surveys” which touts that its polls can be integrated on air for more social interaction. Expect to see more of these types of cards popping up in a feed near you, soon.

Mozilla to enable Click to Play by default for all plugins from March 31

89536447 645x250 520x245 Mozilla to enable Click to Play by default for all plugins from March 31

Mozilla announced back in January 2013 that it planned to eventually require all plugins to be ‘Click to Play’ by default, meaning that users will need to click on plugins in-page in order to enable them and view their content.

Today, the company revealed it will close the application window for whitelisted plugins on March 31, but will only start blocking by default no sooner than Firefox 30. In a post on Mozilla’s security blog, the company said that it “strongly [encourages] site authors to phase out their use of plugins” due to new Web technologies that make plugins less essential and the effect they can have on browser stability.

Mozilla continued in the post to say that the change is also due to stability problems. The company said that “plugins are a significant source of poor performance, crashes and security vulnerabilities” and because of this “plugins present real costs to Firefox users.”

firefox click to play blocklist Mozilla to enable Click to Play by default for all plugins from March 31

Plugin developers have 30 days to submit a request to join a plugin whitelist, which will exempt them from the Click to Play changes and allow their plugins to load without user interaction.

Mozilla pointed out that the plugin whitelist is only temporary and will whitelist a single plugin for four consecutive Firefox releases.  After that, developers are encouraged to move away to Web-based technologies or will need to apply for a continued exemption.

Some plugins, such as Adobe Flash, will be permanently exempt from the Click to Play functionality but only for the very latest version of the player. Older versions will revert to requiring users to Click to Play or will require them to update the plugin.

Mozilla’s move is a good one; many plugins are bad for browser stability and performance, so requiring them to be disabled by default should lead to a more stable browsing experience for all.

Windows Phone 8.1 custom backgrounds shown off in leak

A new leak circulating the Web today shows off a feature that has been long sought after by Windows Phone owners; custom backgrounds.

Images that surfaced on Windows Blog Italy show that custom wallpaper images will be shown as an overlay across live tiles themselves, rather than the background of the phone. The feature has been rumored for some time and this is the first time we’ve actually seen it in action.

It might not be quite what Windows Phone enthusiasts were hoping for, but it’s a nice twist on the traditional background wallpaper look. Windows Phone 8.1 is expected to be unveiled at Microsoft’s BUILD conference this April.

IE10 falls below IE9 in market share, Firefox hits 60-month low, and Chrome again gains the most

358898 1321 520x245 IE10 falls below IE9 in market share, Firefox hits 60 month low, and Chrome again gains the most

February saw the fourth full month of IE11 availability with Windows 8.1, the release Firefox 27 and Chrome 33. The latest numbers from Net Applications show IE10 has fallen below IE9, and that Chrome was the only winner last month.

Between January and February, IE slipped 0.02 percentage points (from 58.21 percent to 58.19 percent), Firefox fell 0.40 percentage points (from 18.08 percent to 17.68 percent), and Chrome gained 0.56 percentage points (from 16.28 percent to 16.84 percent). Safari meanwhile dipped 0.13 percentage points to 5.67 percent and Opera slid 0.05 percentage points to 1.23 percent.

ie share february 2014 IE10 falls below IE9 in market share, Firefox hits 60 month low, and Chrome again gains the most

At 58.19 percent, Internet Explorer is only slightly below its highest point of 2013 (in November it was at 58.36 percent). Last January, the browser went back above the 55 percent mark, and it looks like in 2014 it’s going to aim for the 60 percent mark.

IE11 grabbed an additional 1.29 percentage points (moving 11.51 percent to 12.80 percent). Its predecessor declined 1.24 percentage points to 8.04 percent, falling below IE9, which slipped 0.12 percentage points to 8.80 percent. As Windows 8 users upgrade to Windows 8.1, we’ll likely continue to see IE10 lose share very rapidly.

IE8 unfortunately regained 0.48 percentage points, and it’s still the world’s most popular browser at 21.73 percent. IE11 continues to mainly steal market share from IE10 and IE9, since Windows XP users can’t upgrade past IE8.

IE7 fell 0.58 percentage points to 1.87 percent and IE6 managed to grow 0.11 percentage points to 4.65 percent. In September 2013, IE6 finally fell below the 5 percent mark, and thankfully it hasn’t regained all its losses.

firefox share february 2014 IE10 falls below IE9 in market share, Firefox hits 60 month low, and Chrome again gains the most

At 17.68 percent, Firefox has slipping below the 18 percent mark, where it has hovered for the last seven months. In fact, the last time it was in the 17 percent range was all the way back in April 2008.

Firefox 27 only managed to grab 7.90 percent share, as it was released in the middle of the month. Firefox 26 fell 7.64 percentage points, and all the other versions lost share: Firefox 25, Firefox 24, and Firefox 23 lost a combined 0.18 points.

chrome share february 2014 IE10 falls below IE9 in market share, Firefox hits 60 month low, and Chrome again gains the most

At 16.84 percent, Chrome continues to slowly recover its losses in 2013, and is getting close to finally passing Firefox. Chrome 33 only managed to grab 3.70 percentage points, which would have been higher if it was available for a full month. Chrome 32 grew to 3.07 percentage points to 9.86 percent, while all other versions were down: Chrome 31, Chrome 30, and Chrome 39 fell a combined 5.91 points.

Net Applications uses data captured from 160 million unique visitors each month by monitoring some 40,000 websites for its clients. StatCounter is another popular service for watching market share moves; the company looks at 15 billion page views. To us, it makes more sense to keep track of users than page views (for more, see this post).

Nevertheless, for February 2014, StatCounter listed Chrome as first with 43.89 percent market share, IE in second with 22.49 percent, Firefox in third with 19.21 percent, Safari with 9.74 percent, and Opera with 1.34 percent. The only part everyone agrees on is that Safari and Opera are not in the top three.
