Report: Sweden’s startup ecosystem retains EU lead, but loses momentum

Aug06

Sweden remains the leading startup ecosystem in the EU, second only to the UK in Europe as a whole. That’s according to this year’s Global Startup Ecosystem Index Report by StartupBlink. In the past decade, the Nordic nation has emerged as one of the world’s top tier startup hubs. Home to over 7,000 startups and scaleups, Sweden has also minted 41 unicorns to date. This includes high-profile companies such as Spotify, Klarna, and NorthVolt. In addition, the country is the European leader in exit value above $1bn, also outperforming global powerhouses Singapore, Israel, and Canada. Numerous factors are behind Sweden’s…

Minds are ‘not currency for social media,’ says EU as TikTok kills Lite Rewards

TikTok will permanently withdraw its controversial Lite Rewards programme in the EU to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA) — a sweeping content moderation rulebook for online platforms. TikTok Lite is the data-light version of the app, designed to work at slower internet connections and in devices with small memory capacity. Its Rewards programme allows users to earn points by liking content, watching videos, following creators, and inviting friends to join the platform. They can then exchange these points for rewards, such as Amazon vouchers. The strategy is as simple as it is disturbing: rewarding screen time with financial…

It’s Friday, and you know what that means! That’s right — it’s time to talk about working yourself to death. It’s a fate we could all face. Take your humble writer, forced to slave away his Friday at a battered keyboard, squeezing out my last words like a lemon that’s been thrown to hordes of starving rats (love you, boss). It’s a tough life, I know — thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. But at least I’m not in Japan. In the Land of the Rising Sun, overwork death is so common that it has a special name: karoshi.…

1 million signatures could make killing video games illegal in the EU

Aug02
by Sindy Cator on August 2, 2024 at 12:41 pm
Posted In: Insider

A new European Citizens’ Initiative has launched to try and make it illegal for game publishers to render games useless to players. Should it succeed in getting 1 million signatures, the European Commission will have to consider making it law. One of the most frustrating things you can encounter as a gamer is when a publisher decides to kill one of your favourite games. This can happen for a number of reasons — licence agreements expire, server maintenance becomes too costly, end-of-life-strategies to push players towards new titles, etc. An increasing number of games rely on servers to run. If…
