Apple is in talks with cable TV provider Comcast to come up with a streaming TV service that dishes up high network-like quality TV shows, the Wall Street Journal reports. The arrangement being discussed would make use of an Apple set-top box for streaming live and on-demand TV shows and digital recordings stored in the cloud, but the TV service’s traffic would be separated from public Internet access, effectively avoiding slow buffering that can take place while streaming Web video. The WSJ says that Apple and Comcast aren’t close to an agreement yet as there are many issues to iron…

Cow
2014 might be the year for wearable tech, but there’s no reason for it to stop at humans. Or dogs. Is there? That’s right, although it’s not quite the bovine Fitbit you might have been thinking of, the company behind the Silent Herdsman (formerly known as Embedded Technology Systems, an altogether less catchy name) cow collar has bagged another £3 million investment to bring it (and other new services) to farmers around the world. Rather than, err, counting calories burned, the Silent Herdsman collar has various sensors that continually track a cow and trigger an alert (on a phone, tablet or computer) if…

Huawei
The New York Times and German newspaper Spiegel Online have reported the existence of a document that purports to show the US government spying on Chinese tech company Huawei, the world’s second largest supplier of networking products, since at least 2009. The revelation is laced with irony because Huawei has long been labelled a national security risk by US politicians. Alongside fellow Chinese firm ZTE, Huawei has been the subject of multiple reports over alleged relationships with China’s army, and questions of whether its networking products could leave US organizations open to hacking from China if they were deployed on US soil. The answer seems…
