Sound familiar? Bitcoin exchange Vircurex freezes customer accounts as it battles insolvency

bitcoin
The implosion of Mt. Gox has been widely heralded as a sign of a new era of Bitcoin companies, but there are still examples of the unpredictable and shady side of the cryptocurrency world, as developments at Vircurex demonstrate. The Beijing-based virtual currency exchange is much smaller than Mt. Gox, but it is notable that it has stopped withdrawals of Bitcoin, Litecoin and other coins today, and it will freeze all existing user accounts from Monday after running into serious financial issues. Vircurex was hacked twice last year and had been using a reserve of ‘cold storage‘ currency to reimburse users…

LG’s foray into new verticals consists of more than just its first smartwatch — the G Watch, which was announced last week — after the Korean firm unveiled its answer to the Philips Hue, its less-than-excitingly named ‘Smart Bulb’. Android Central reports that the bulb will last for a decade if used for five hours per day, but more interestingly it comes with compatible iOS and Android apps and supports Bluetooth. The apps allow users to control a range of settings, and include a security mode — which uses a lighting sequence to mimic someone being at home — and a…

brain
Adam Benzion is the founder of Entirely—a Seattle startup focused on social innovation, keen on connecting more people in more places to create special things together.  “Everybody in this country should learn to program a computer, because it teaches you how to think.”— Steve Jobs Anyone who’s paying attention these days has probably figured out that computer programming is fast becoming the new standard of literacy in our technology-driven economy. Those with even a rudimentary knowledge of code will probably read this little article and chuckle. But for me and many other “business types,” not understanding coding has become a real handicap and…

frustrated at work
Andrea Ayres-Deets is the Lead Writer at ooomf, an invite-only network connecting short-term software projects with handpicked developers and designers. Andrea writes about psychology, creativity, and business over on the ooomf blog. Okay, quiet time… Time for work… Working shall commence now… One hour later… This is what happens at least thirty times a day. I’ll begin to focus on work and then immediately my internal dialogue will get in the way. The more I have to do, the more unhelpful it seems to be. For many, our inner dialogue goes beyond just being disruptive. It can totally hamper our creativity and destroy…

Why the ROI of community doesn’t actually matter

Collaboration
Sarah Judd Welch is the founder & head of community design + BD at Loyal where she designs communities for startups, brands, and Fortune 100s. I’ve never felt entirely comfortable defending my work in community. Yes, I’ll tell you about Return on Investments (ROI) all you want, but truly, community has much bigger ambitions. I spent the summer between middle school and high school busing from San Jose’s suburban edges to downtown where I spent my days tutoring students at the local elementary school in their worn down, gang ridden neighborhoods. What I remember most was learning the word “amor” and…
