Alibaba isn’t afraid to invest its money in new projects — its most recent deal saw it shell out nearly $250 million for a stake in SingPost – but now the e-commerce giant is getting into sports, soccer to be precise, after buying a 50 percent share of China’s top team Guangzhou Evergrande. Xinhua reports that the investment is reportedly worth $192 million, and it will see Alibaba become “part owner” of the side which won China’s domestic league and last year’s Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League. It isn’t clear at this point why Alibaba is making the deal, though it may be inspired…

Smartphone sales up 43% in a year in Southeast Asia, with 18m units worth $4.2b sold in Q1 2014

Southeast Asia is an up-and-coming region for smartphones, with sales continuing to intensify and breaking the halfway mark in the overall handset market to surpass feature phones, according to a latest report from market research firm GfK. In total, 18 million smartphones were sold across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam in the first quarter of 2014, up 43 percent from the same period a year ago. The value of all the smartphones sold in January through March was pegged at $4.2 billion, up 25 percent from the same period a year ago, according to the report. Notably, in…

Tired of tapping or nodding to see a notification in Google Glass? Google thinks you are. Today the company announced that an experimental feature, Notification Glance will let you see Notifications by just looking up. The current method for seeing a notification involves either tapping the touchpad or nodding your head up. Neither of which seem very cool to anyone standing near you while wear Glass. Now when you hear the notification chime, just look up at that display and see who’s texting or emailing you. To enable the feature head to Settings bundle and tap the new Notification card. After…
