"Mother's Day is a very complex holiday. It starts with a simple premise: Let your Mother know you love her. After that, she'll argue with you all day, telling you how you don't love her, just so that you have to apologize and show her how much you love her, despite being yelled at all day." ~ Yasha Harari

Livelens releases a Google Glass app for live-streaming video

Livelens has launched a Google Glass app for its live-streaming service, allowing users to share video in real-time from the head-mounted display. The new Glassware joins Livelens’ existing iOS and Android apps. While third-party Google Glass developers are still figuring out how to put the headset to good use, live-streaming is one of the key use cases that benefits from the form factor. Unfortunately, Glass’ battery capacity isn’t quite ready for continuous streaming, but apps like Livelens and Livestream could come in handy for broadcasting shorter events. The Livelens service includes social features, such as liking and commenting on videos, as…

‘You didn’t get the job’: How to respectfully reject job candidates

business man on smartphone
Al Mackin is the founder of Formisimo. The article was originally published on LinkedIn. One of the best parts of creating a business is that you start with nothing. No HR policies, no processes and no entrenched ways of doing things. This blank slate is both scary and exciting. We recently interviewed candidates to become our fourth team member, and it was a hugely rewarding process. The traditional way of interviewing is pointless; putting pressure on someone to answer questions in the right way doesn’t give you the insight you need to determine if both you and the candidate can…

Fixing our relationship with the Millennial generation

friends millennials
Ben Huh is the founder and CEO of The Cheezburger Network. The Millennial Generation (commonly defined as those born in the 1980’s and mid-1990’s) make up 27 percent of the US population and outnumber the Baby Boomers. Already, their economic clout is massive, and is projected to eclipse their parents’ generation in 2018. Brands are either desperate or salivating, depending on their current market positioning. Yet, understanding an entire generation is admittedly a guessing game and a pseudo-science. How do you define a generation anyway? Brands, employers, social scientists are desperate to understand how to sell, hire, motivate and engage this group. Despite…

Box acquires file-streaming service Streem to help with content management

Jun16
by Sindy Cator on June 16, 2014 at 6:04 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Insider

Online storage provider Box has acquired YC-backed Streem, a cloud-based filesystem that allowed users to mount virtual drives on their desktops and get streaming access to their files. Streem’s three technologies, which include its filesystem, custom streaming and buffering algorithms, and a video transcoder, will be incorporated into Box. There’s no specific timeline on when Box will integrate Streem’s technology, but it plans to “rapidly” make it happen. Existing Streem users can have their files transitioned over to a Box account, or they can choose to download a ZIP file with their data. The firm will share more information on the migration process in…

Amazon’s smartphone doesn’t have to beat Apple to succeed, it just needs to be your pocket salesman

_0614_amazon
The smartphone market is brutal. It destroys companies that can’t keep up and makes established tech juggernauts look like a bumbling startup. It’s harsh, unrelenting and Amazon is getting ready to shoulder its way into the fray. On Wednesday Amazon is expected to reveal its long-rumored smartphone. Judging from the teaser video Amazon released with the event’s announcement, a 3D display is all but a given. Then Jeff Bezos, the company’s CEO, shipped members of the press that are attending the event a book, Mr. Pine’s Purple House. The book is about being different with an emphasis on being purple. Even the note that accompanied the…
