US-FACEBOOK-MENLO PARK

In addition to releasing Graph API version 2.1 today, Facebook also announced two important changes to its Platform Policies under games and proper use. Developers have 90 days (until November 5, 2014) to comply with the new rules. Here is how Facebook spells the two out: Games which include mandatory or optional in-app charges must now disclose this in their app’s description, either on Facebook or other platforms it supports. This is to give people a clear indication that your game may charge people during gameplay. You must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page….

Facebook today released Graph API version 2.1, as well as updated Android and iOS SDKs that work with it. For those who don’t know, the Graph API is the primary way for apps to read and write to the Facebook social graph. The release means the new version is now available to all apps, and has also been set as the default version for all new apps. At its f8 developer conference in April, Facebook announced the main way it would release changes to its Platform would be through new API versions. With this change came a two-year stability guarantee…

Facebook will now let Pages track engagement data on an Events page with Insights. Now you’ll be able to see how well your posts are trending for your upcoming birthday party. First noticed by AllFacebook, Insights adds a week’s reach, view and connection information for an event to the sidebar. The information is only visible to event hosts. If you already have a Pages event on Facebook you should be able to see the analytics on Events created after July 24. Insights on Events only works on items created after that date. For a Facebook page that uses Events on a regular basis, this is…

Google today released a preview SDK of Google Fit available to developers. The tool provides APIs for apps and device manufacturers to store and access activity data from fitness apps and sensors on Android and other devices (like wearables, heart rate monitors or connected scales). Google warns that the preview release contains the Google Fit APIs for Android, but does not contain the REST API or the Android Wear APIs, which will be included in the official release. Furthermore, while it will let you develop and test fitness apps, they cannot be published to Google Play until official release. By…

Yelp Opens Its East Coast Headquarters In New York City

Yelp today updated its iOS app with Microsoft’s Bing Translator integration for reviews. You can download the new version now directly from Apple’s App Store. Foreign language reviews can be translated automatically with the tap of a button: you can interpret one review or all reviews in one go. The feature works for all 15 officially supported Yelp languages spanning 27 countries: English, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, French, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Turkish, and Japanese. We all know the (sometimes ridiculous) inaccuracies that plague services like Google Translate and Bing Translator, but Yelp thinks the tradeoff is…
