Matthew D. Sarrel is a technology journalist, analyst and founder of Sarrel Group, a technical marketing consultancy based in New York City and San Francisco. Anyone developing consumer software knows that we live in a mobile-first world. I see companies today that actually have a live app before they have a live website. Earlier this year, a comScore report found that the majority of consumers are using a combination of PC/Mobile/Tablet to access retail sites. Just as we saw a revolutionary shift from traditional methods of interaction (snail mail, telephone) to Web in the 90s, this decade, we are seeing a shift from Web…

Scribd overhauls its ebook subscription service to help you find interesting reads

BrowseHistoryAfter

All-you-can-read subscription ebook service Scribd has received an overhaul with new smart discovery features that should help you browse for new content to read. The new look launches today on the Web and is coming to the firm’s mobile apps in the next few weeks. To undertake the redesign, Scribd brought on a team of editors to create a category tree from scratch that goes beyond current classification systems. The tree contains 1,800 categories. Scribd also took a Pandora-like approach to tagging content so that users can find books with highly-specific themes. Similar to the Music Genome Project, a team…

Xbox One digital TV tuner will allow Europeans to control live TV without HDMI pass-through

US-ENTERTAINMENT-IT-E3

Microsoft is releasing a digital TV tuner to help new Xbox One owners in Europe use their console to access, navigate and control live TV. Until now, the Xbox One has required a cable or satellite set-top box, connected via HDMI pass-through, to unlock voice commands, channel snapping, OneGuide and other console-exclusive TV features. In many regions across Europe however, citizens can access over-the-air digital terrestrial TV  – such as Freeview in the UK – without a dedicated set-top box. Just throw the aerial cable into the back of your TV and oftentimes, you’re good to go. The new tuner will,…

PandaDoc for iPad is an easy (and cheap) way of electronically signing documents

PandaDoc has been pushing its mobile-first approach to paper-free document handling for small businesses for almost a year. However, something’s really clicked now and its newly-updated iPad app for electronically signing documents is really worth a look. There are plenty of e-signature apps already out there but I was impressed by PandaDoc’s simple, modern UI that makes signing and annotating documents, or sending them to others to sign, a breeze. There’s support for Dropbox, Google Drive, Box and OneDrive, although a strange quirk means that if you simply want to sign something yourself, you’ll have to set up the signature field,…

Fleksy has finally unveiled plans for two major languages on its smart Android keyboard – Chinese and Arabic — opening up the app to hundreds of millions of potential new users. Arabic is now already launched on Fleksy with the latest app update, albeit in a beta version. At the same time, the update also introduces four new themes for those interested in prettifying the interface with custom looks. Chinese support, however, is coming soon — there isn’t a specific timeline yet, but you can register on a sign-up page to be informed when the beta launch rolls out. Fleksy has released a demo…
