Tesla has announced that it will build its $5 billion battery Gigafactory in Nevada. News of the deal leaked out ahead of time, but the partnership is now official. The company first announced its plans for a Gigafactory in February. Its goal is to produce more battery capacity by 2020 than was produced worldwide last year, enough for 500,000 vehicles. Tesla expects cost savings of as much as 30 percent by the end of the first year of production of its mass market vehicle. Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval said in a statement that the project will have “nearly 100 billion dollars in economic…

starbucks

If you’re jonesing for a coffee and it’s too far to walk, the Starbucks iOS app was just updated with Uber integration. Now you can call a black car to get your black coffee. The app is live now but warns that you “must have the Uber app installed and be in a city where Uber is available.” Seems fair enough. When you click on the Uber button in the Starbucks app for a store you’d like to visit, it launches the Uber app. From there it’s the typical Uber experience except at the end you get a hot cup of caffeine….

Following the release of Firefox 32 just two days ago, Mozilla today updated its Firefox Beta channel to version 33 for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. Unlike the previous release that was more focused on performance and security, this one adds new features that the company is eager to have its community try out. Update: Mozilla is having some trouble getting this beta out, so you should expect a delay. We’ll remove this update once it’s completely rolled out. Desktop The biggest addition in this release is the introduction of an experimental Web Real Time Communication (WebRTC) feature. By building it…

Hackers managed to install malicious software on a Healthcare.gov test server

It’s been a tough year for the US government’s Healthcare.gov. The site launched with an abundance of technical challenges, and now, to make matters worse, officials have confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that one of Healthcare.gov’s servers fell victim to a hacking attack in July. Thankfully, user information doesn’t appear to have been compromised during the incident, as the server in question was used for testing code. Apparently, the server wasn’t supposed to be connected to the Internet, as it still had the default password. The hackers may not have even realized that they’d gained access to a valuable Healthcare.gov server….

The Apple reports just keep coming. This time The New York Times chimes in with a report that the larger iPhone will come with a one-handed mode for easier typing and that the iWatch circuit board is about the size of a postage stamp. The NYT also reports that the edges of the new iPhones will be softer and more tapered to make holding the devices more comfortable. Helpful when you’re holding a larger and potentially heavier device. It also reports that the iWatch will charge wirelessly. An earlier report from The Wall Street Journal says that the iWatch will come…
