Facebook, Pinterest and Box have announced a new initiative called WEST (Women Entering and Staying in Tech) that will provide one-on-one mentorship for women pursuing careers in technology. Over the past few months, a number of large tech companies, including Facebook and Pinterest, have gone public with the diversity figures for their organizations. The common theme is that firms have admitted that they have work to do in improving their ethnicity and gender ratios. WEST will start its pilot program in 2015. Woman working in technical roles at the partner companies will act as mentors to other women who are in…

Satya Nadella Delivers Opening Keynote At Microsoft Build Conference

Microsoft has released a new photo-sharing app for iOS, Android and Windows Phone called Xim. Unlike Instagram, Flickr and most other apps in this space though, Xim is geared around simultaneous viewing. So the user selects a group of photos and then everyone sees them on their device at once. Swipe, zoom or pan and everyone follows suit. Only the original sharer needs to have Xim installed too. Recipients are selected from the user’s address book, and alerted via their email address or phone number. They’re then prompted to view the collection in a web browser, or the Xim app…

With the growing popularity of fitness wearables, Apple’s Health app in iOS 8 seeks to keep all your health information stocked in one place. But it seems that Fitbit, makers of some of the most popular fitness trackers around, have no plans to integrate with Apple’s health solution so far. Responding to inquiries about iOS 8 compatibility on its customer forums (via 9to5Mac), Fitbit stated the following: “We do not currently have plans to integrate with HealthKit. It is an interesting new platform and we will watch as it matures, looking for opportunities to improve the Fitbit experience. At the moment,…

AMPCase5WithHeadphones

SoundFocus, a startup specializing in personalized audio signals for your smartphone, has announced Amp, a new hardware product designed to drastically improve the sound quality of your iPhone. The Amp case lengthens the size of your iPhone by adding stereo speakers on the top and bottom. It also houses an external battery that should add roughly 25 percent extra battery life. When the device ships in Spring 2015, it will support iPhone 5 and later. Amp’s preorder price is $69, but it’s expected to retail for $129. The iPhone 5s prototype that the SoundFocus team brought to our meeting didn’t…

Moto X 2014 Review

When the original Moto X launched last year, I was in the market for a new Android phone. Yet the lure of Moto X’s $199 price tag and customizable touches didn’t sway me. Perhaps it seemed gimmicky and appeared to pack more fashion than hardware and software punches. I also couldn’t look past the budget specs at the same price as an iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy S5. The second-generation Moto X proved completely otherwise. After spending a month with Motorola’s latest flagship smartphone, everything about its improvements make the Moto X the best Android phone you can buy today. Design The most noticeable difference…
