Turns out that the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption we’ve relied on for secure communication on the Internet has a vulnerability. Today Google researchers announced (PDF link) that they have found a bug in the SSL 3.0 protocol. The exploit could be used to intercept critical data that’s supposed to be encrypted between clients and servers. The exploit first allows attackers to initiate a “downgrade dance” that tells the client that the server doesn’t support the more secure TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol and forces it to connect via SSL 3.0. From there a man-in-the-middle attack can decrypt secure HTTP cookies. Google…

While Uber and Lyft fight about their driver recruitment methods, Sidecar has managed to get authorization to offer rides to SFO. Today SFO (San Francisco International Airport) granted the ride-sharing service a permit to resume rides to SFO. Sidecar will start taking customers to the airport within 30 days. The permit is part of an extended pilot program to study traffic congestion. While regular rides are permitted, Sidecar’s Shared Rides will not be allowed at the airport. The CPUC (California Public Utilities Commission) contends that shared rides from Sidecar, Uber and Lyft are illegal, something all three companies have insisted are…

Among rumors that the newest Nexus devices will be announced as soon as tomorrow, Google Senior VP Sundar Pichai sent out this tweet earlier today: Met some sweet new friends today. #NationalDessertDay#Androidhttp://t.co/KNxe1LjpgI — sundarpichai (@sundarpichai) October 14, 2014 The tweet links to this video showing off auditions for the newest version of Android: We’re not exactly sure how Oreos fit into Android L, but this comes after Google apparently accidentally released three new ads promoting the newest Nexus devices. It shouldn’t be a long wait to learn more. Read More: Google’s new Android ads could be teasing the next Nexus smartphone and tablet

First, Apple announced that after 2009, the company would no longer exhibit at Macworld Expo, the annual trade show-slash-revival meeting of the Mac faithful that took place right after New Years in San Francisco. Steve Jobs’ keynotes at Expo were legendary. Then, IDG World Expo General Manager Paul Kent, who headed up the conference, decided to host a different kind of annual confab in 2010 called Macworld/iWorld, with an emphasis on the Apple mobile market. While MW/IW struggled at first, it seemed to be gaining some traction over time. But evidently not enough. And now, it too, is going away — at least for the…

snapchat_android_3

Snapchat today issued a statement regarding the photo leaks that occurred last Friday. This is the second statement from the company, designed to dispel worries that its servers had been hacked. In the blog post, Snapchat clarifies that there are third parties who have gained access to the app’s API, but are not supported by the company. According to Snapchat, there isn’t a public API because it takes time to create an “open and trustworthy” third-party application ecosystem, and that in the meantime it’s working with Apple and Google to take down third-party applications. That won’t stop these apps from being…
