Malta-based cryptocurrency exchange CGEX to shut down before its first birthday

Malta-based CGEX, a cryptocurrency exchange launched by South Korea’s Coinone in October last year, will cease operating in a few weeks. An announcement posted last week specified that the exchange would cease operating on Sept. 18 at 2:50 UTC. Following that cut-off point, users will be unable to access their accounts. Deposits and withdrawals will also no longer be possible. The news also comes after the exchange temporarily suspended trading and deposits on July 17. First opened in October 28, 2018, GCEX offered cryptocurrency-to-cryptocurrency trading and was integrated into Coinone’s activity in South Korea and Indonesia. Its closure comes amid a report which…

Putting Statistics

Aug19
by Sindy Cator on August 19, 2019 at 1:11 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, golf, sumproduct

Because of my recent terrible putting, I decided to keep track of every putt to see what I can see about it. Here’s how I compiled the stats.

I wrote down how many paces each putt was and assumed one step was 2.5 feet. The Made formula in the table is

=SUMPRODUCT(([Date]=[@Date])*([Hole]=[@Hole])*([Putt]=[@Putt]+1))=0

For that date and hole, see if there’s a putt with a higher number. If not, I must have made that one. The Left formula is

=SUMPRODUCT(([Date]=[@Date])*([Hole]=[@Hole])*([Putt]=[@Putt]+1)*([Length]))

Same as the last except that it sums the length of the putt that’s one higher. Over in the stats table, I use these formulas

Made:

=SUMPRODUCT((tblPutts[Length]>=I3)*(tblPutts[Length]<=J3)*(tblPutts[Made]))

If it’s greater than or equal to the first number and less than or equal to the second number and I made it, count it.

Made %:

=IFERROR(K3/SUMPRODUCT((tblPutts[Length]>=I3)*(tblPutts[Length]<=J3)),0)

Take the number made and divide it by the total putts in that distance range. The IFERROR is for divide by zero errors.

Avg Left:

=IFERROR(SUMPRODUCT((tblPutts[Length]>=I3)*(tblPutts[Length]<=J3)*(NOT(tblPutts[Made]))*(tblPutts[Left]))/SUMPRODUCT((tblPutts[Length]>=I3)*(tblPutts[Length]<=J3)*(NOT(tblPutts[Made]))),0)

This sums all the “Left” numbers for putts not made and divides by the number of putts not made.

Max Left:

{=MAX((tblPutts[Length]>=I3)*(tblPutts[Length]<=J3)*(NOT(tblPutts[Made]))*(tblPutts[Left]))}

This one’s an array formula, so enter with Ctrl+Shift+Enter, not just enter.

In retrospect, I should have noted putts that went past the hole as negative distances and putts that were short of the hole as positive distances. I could have got the same stats as above plus I would know if I had a tendency to be short or long. It feels like enough bookkeeping for the golf course already, but maybe I’ll implement that change in the future.

So, what did I learn? I learned that I like numbers and statistics, but I don’t think I learned anything useful for my golf game.

Google stops sharing your network data with carriers over privacy concerns

Aug19
by Sindy Cator on August 19, 2019 at 12:42 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Google

For once, Google is putting an end to a data collection practice before it attracts closer inspection from lawmakers and regulators. Reuters is reporting that Google has shut down its Mobile Network Insights service over concerns that “sharing data from users of its Android phone system might attract the scrutiny of users and regulators.” The service — which is offered to wireless carriers across the world — was essentially a map of signal strengths and connection speeds, and was meant to identify weak spots in their network coverage. Google’s privacy dilemma The search giant launched the service in March 2017,…

CHEAP: Ugh, $80 for this Bose SoundLink Micro Bluetooth speaker is a DISGUSTING deal

Aug19

Posted In: Around the Web, Plugged

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! Maybe it’s the impact technology has had on my brain, but I really can’t bear to be without music these days. Whether I’m working on my laptop (hello ambient playlists), walking around town (god bless you headphones), or am, well, anywhere, I feel I need music to soundtrack my day. But, what do you do in those situations you’re away from your main audio set-up? Or where wearing headphones isn’t really an option? Then, friends, you need yourself a portable Bluetooth speaker. Say hello…

The latest claim to Satoshi Nakamoto is the stupidest one yet

Aug19
by Sindy Cator on August 19, 2019 at 12:35 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, cryptocurrency, Hard Fork

For years, Faketoshis have been fighting to claim the Bitcoin throne, trying to make us all believe they were responsible for the cryptocurrency’s creation. But things took a different turn this weekend after an unknown person(s) decided it was time to reveal their identity as the ‘real’ Satoshi Nakomoto in a three-part blog post series. Possibly exhausted by peoples’ previous attempts to do the same, and having noticed several significant inconsistencies in the person’s writing, it didn’t take long for Bitcoin Twitter to react and call Faketoshi’s claims into question. Here are a few examples of what Faketoshi 2.0 got wrong and…
