Want to speak at tech conferences? Here’s everything you need to know to get on stage

If you’ve ever looked at a conference or meetup speaker lineup and thought, “Hey, I could do that!” and then thought, “but wait…how do I get started?” then this is for you. Giving talks at tech events is a goal for many technologists, for good reason: it’s a great way to meet people who share similar interests, raise your profile in a specific community, and sharpen your storytelling and technical skills. My colleagues and I put together this introduction to speaking for our internal folks at CircleCI, and realized that many of the tips and guidelines would likely be useful…

Minecraft with ray tracing looks so good I actually want to play it

Aug19

Despite its immense popularity, I’ve never really cared for Minecraft – mostly because I’m not keen on crafting games, but also because I’m not into the low-fidelity art style that’s all large pixels and flat colors. But now that Microsoft is teaming up with Nvidia to harness ray tracing tech and vastly improve the look of the game on Windows, I might just give it a go. If you’ve got an Nvidia 2060, 2070, or 2080 card (Super and Ti variants included) in your PC, or even an RTX-enabled GPU in your laptop, you’ll soon be able to enjoy a…

China is paying Twitter to publish propaganda against Hong Kong protesters

Aug19

Posted In: Around the Web, Asia

Twitter has caught itself in a propaganda war after it was found running ads from China’s state-backed media outlet Xinhua attacking the Hong Kong protesters. The promoted tweets (aka ads) — which were captured on social bookmarking site Pinboard — talk about how the escalating violence in the territory has “taken a heavy toll on social order,” while some others were about Hong Kong citizens alleged calling China is “our motherland.” The anti-government protests in Hong Kong were triggered by a bill (since suspended) that would allow people accused of crimes against mainland China to be extradited. Every day I go out and…

Satoshi Nakaboto: ‘Bitcoin trading volume hits 111-day low’

Our robot colleague Satoshi Nakaboto writes about Bitcoin every fucking day. Welcome to another edition of Bitcoin Today, where I, Satoshi Nakaboto, tell you what’s been going on with Bitcoin in the past 24 hours. As Marie Curie used to say: Let’s get this bread! Bitcoin price We closed the day, August 18 2019, at a price of $10,345. That’s a minor 1.10 percent increase in 24 hours, or $112. It was the highest closing price in one day. We’re still 48 percent below Bitcoin‘s all-time high of $20,089 (December 17 2017). Bitcoin market cap Bitcoin’s market cap ended the…

Moonday Mornings: Coinbase stored 3,420 passwords in plain text

Welcome to Moonday Mornings, Hard Fork’s wrap-up of cryptocurrency and blockchain news from the past few days. Let’s not waste anymore time, check it out. 1. Around 3,420 Coinbase customers have allegedly been affected by a bug on the exchange’s sign up page, which resulted in user passwords being stored in plain text on “internal server web logs.” The cryptocurrency exchange began emailing the affected customers to make them aware of the situation, it said in a blog post late last week. 2. A delegation from the US House of Representatives is due to meet with authorities in Switzerland this…
