A study released by PayPal suggests female streamers, particularly American gamers, are less likely to be paid for the content they produce, in spite of the fact that viewers as a whole are spending a lot of money on livestreamers. The details: PayPal’s survey, conducted with 25,000 participants in 25 countries, examined spending habits of gamers who’ve use PayPal’s service — and it revealed a few insights into how gamers spend their money. When it comes to livestreaming, viewers are more willing than ever to spend their money: 34 percent reported spending more than $50 on streamers in the last…

AI researchers developed a privacy-filter to fight facial recognition

A team of researchers from the University of Toronto have developed an algorithm that protects images from facial recognition AI. What it does: The researchers, Parham Aarabi and Avishek Bose, developed the AI to defend photos from facial recognition, but it’s not a shield — it’s actually an attack agent. Bose, a graduate student working on the project, told EurekAlert: The disruptive AI can ‘attack’ what the neural net for the face detection is looking for. If the detection AI is looking for the corner of the eyes, for example, it adjusts the corner of the eyes so they’re less noticeable.…

Cryptocurrency and blockchain businesses are scaling rapidly; so much so, that a cryptocurrency business that started less than a year ago is giving away billions of dollars in funding. Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, announced a $1 billion venture fund for blockchain and cryptocurrency startups on Thursday. Ella Zhang, the head of the exchange’s incubator program Binance Labs, revealed the initiative, named “Social Impact Fund”, during an online meetup. As per Zhang, Binance alone will contribute to the fund, and all investments will be made through Binance (BNB) token. The company plans to invest the $1 billion over…

Facebook has killed the hated Trending Topics bar

Jun01

Trending Topics was one of those Facebook features that seemed sensible on paper, but in practice turned out to be a major headache for the company. During its four-year lifespan, it was accused of showing bias (on both sides of the partisan divide), and surfaced fake news stories — including one from the British tabloid The Daily Star about how the 9/11 attacks were faked. Facebook has sensibly decided to call it quits, and is discontinuing the feature — which has been a never-ending source of criticism for the company, despite only being available in a handful of countries. In…
