A blood test could one day save millions by allowing doctors to screen for cancer before patients show symptoms. The test, called a “liquid biopsy,” screens for 10 types of the disease by detecting trace amounts of DNA released into the bloodstream by cancer cells. So far, it has proven particularly capable of detecting ovarian and pancreatic cancer, both of which have significantly lower mortality rates when caught early enough to perform surgery as a means of removing the cancer. Unfortunately, most are caught after patients begin to show symptoms, which is often after the cancer has spread to other…

Long standing rumors Microsoft has its sights set on acquiring popular code repository GitHub, it turns out, may have some substance. A report from Business Insider cites sources close to both GitHub and Microsoft who claim the two companies came together to discuss a joint marketing venture, and are now contemplating a full acquisition. If the rumors are true, the deal would be worth somewhere in the area of $5 billion – a price one person familiar with the conversations told CNBC was too high for Microsoft’s taste. It’s unclear whether these talks are part of serious consideration, idle chatter over…

Google today internally revealed it would not seek to renew its contract with a Department of Defense AI program, called Project Maven, once the current contract ends. Gizmodo reports Google Cloud CEO Diane Greene informed employees in a meeting today that the company would continue work through the end of the current contract, sometime in 2019, but no further. Greene, according to the report, said the company was reversing its decision to aid the government due to backlash. If you’re unfamiliar with Project Maven, formerly the Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team, it’s been touted as a program to review drone footage.…
