Facebook kicks off pride month 2018 with a bunch of new stickers and backgrounds

Facebook began its pride month celebration this year by launching a plethora of cool LGBTQ-themed features including profile frames, backgrounds, stickers, and more. The best part: these new features won’t be vanishing at the end of pride month like last year’s. The social media network unveiled the new features last week, which include the usual rainbow-themed stickers and backgrounds for text posts, filters for messenger, and a few frames for profile pics. To get started with the text effects, log in to Facebook and start a new post. You can then select a background or stickers for your posts —…

GitHub’s new CEO isn’t asking for your trust, he plans to earn it

After its $7.5 billion acquisition on Monday, Microsoft announced it would be replacing GitHub’s current CEO, co-founder Chris Wanstrath, with one of its own vice presidents, Nat Friedman. Friedman today took to GitHub to introduce himself as the site’s new head honcho, and put to rest any ideas that he’s a suit without the credentials required for the new job. In fact, the hoodie-clad Friedman went to great lengths to tout his development background. “I’ve been a developer since I was six,” Friedman said. He’s been active in open source since the 90s, and that’s where he discovered Linux. His…

Apple will make it easier for developers to port iOS apps to the Mac

At WWDC 2018, Apple announced it would bring UIKit support to the Mac, making it easier to port iOS apps to a desktop environment. If that sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve been hearing about it since at least late last year, when a Bloomberg report detailed something called Project Marzipan at the time: “…software developers will be able to design a single application that works with a touchscreen or mouse and trackpad depending on whether it’s running on the iPhone and iPad operating system or on Mac hardware, according to people familiar with the matter.” And that’s pretty much what happened, though…

Apple’s CreateML makes it easy to use AI models in macOS

Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, today announced CreateML: a tool that allows developers to train AI models without any knowledge of machine learning. Built in Swift, CreateML lets you train vision and natural language models with external GPU support in macOS. It’s a tool for data scientists which allows local training of small-scale models. This means developers can design software and applications for Macs that include baked-in artificial intelligence designed to run locally. With CreateML, developers can train an AI model on “20,000 photos in less than an hour on a MacBook Pro,” according to Apple. The…

WWDC 2018: Everything Apple announced at its annual developer conference

Apple kicked off its annual developer conference today with a promise to deliver exciting updates to each of its four operating systems: iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS. Here’s what’s worth talking about. iOS The emphasis today is on speed. Craig Federighi, Apple’s VP of Software Engineering, took to the stage to tout some of the things iOS 11 did — which was mostly just some not-so-subtle shade throwing at Android — such as its 95 percent favorability rating among users, or its greater than 50 percent adoption rate within a week of launch. Read more: iOS 12 is all about…
