"Ah, the Luck o' the Irish. Queen Elizabeth the Second visits, then President Obama visits, then they get a cloud full of volcanic ash from Iceland. Now the Irish Leprechaun Union is saying that with all this undue attention on the Auld Sod they can't deliver the necessary pots of gold Dublin's government needs." ~ Yasha Harari

Vess Popov, an expert in big data and psychometrics, spoke at Brain Bar in Budapest on the future of data. In his talk he shared his concern that platforms like Facebook are becoming more closed off. Their research is more secretive than ever and less of it is making its way to the scientific community and the general public than ever before. Popov’s concern is understandable as he works for the Psychometrics Center at the University of Cambridge, a research institution that pioneered the study of psychology through big data analysis. They’re basically the ‘good guy’ version of Cambridge Analytica,…

Your future office will be riddled with sensors and that’s okay

You won’t hear this often, but let’s talk about office buildings. They’re pretty awful. Most office buildings waste energy and productivity, use rooms and desks inefficiently and the air quality and the sedentary office lifestyle are often detrimental to employee health. But it doesn’t have to be like that. The office building of the future already exists today — often with cool future-appropriate sci-fi names like The Edge, The Dock or The Crystal. With the help of data analytics, a wide array of sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT), these buildings are what all our offices should aspire to…

India’s central bank admits it banned cryptocurrencies without ever researching them

India’s central bank, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been repeatedly warning citizens against the risk of investing in cryptocurrencies since at least 2013. After repeating the warning twice again in 2017, RBI let out a directive in April to ban all Indian banks from dealing with any cryptocurrency business. You would assume that RBI must have studied cryptocurrencies deeply to come to this conclusion, but you would be wrong. In a response to a right to information (RTI) application filed by a local lawyer, Varun Sethi, the central bank has admitted they did not conduct any research or consult…

Have you ever wanted explore the cryptocurrency scene in Europe? The EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum has built a nifty interactive map that lets you scout the European crypto-ecosystem for relevant startups and events. The tool makes it pretty easy to discover blockchain companies and events. When clicked, each entry on the map displays further information about the company or event in question, including how it was founded, what it does, and what its website is. One particularly useful feature is that the map lets you filter the search criteria for more efficient results. While the map was built with…
