Traditional VCs are finally investing in cryptocurrency and blockchain startups

Recent data suggests traditional venture capital (VC) firms are gradually starting to diversify their portfolios, investing in more cryptocurrency and blockchain projects than ever before. Not surprisingly, VC firms specializing in funding blockchain projects top the list. But traditional VC firms are slowly starting to catch up, making cryptocurrency-based investments a larger portion of their portfolios. Household names like 500 Startups and Andressen Horowitz have made the top 10 after showing continued interest in funding blockchain projects. The study – put together by Crypto Finance Conference and exclusively shared with Hard Fork – highlighted how traditional venture capitals are spreading…

This account shows everyone is living the same life on Instagram

When scrolling through your Instagram feed, do you ever feel like you’re getting déjà vu? This is probably because people seem to be living the same life on Instagram. Whether it’s a perfectly shot piece of avocado toast alongside an artistic looking latte or a breathtaking image of someone jumping from a waterfall, it’s been done before. A million times. It’s hard to remember who posted what when everything looks the same. That’s the idea behind @insta_repeat, an Instagram account which has collected collages of near-identical shots posted by different influencers and photographers. Since June, the photographer-exposing account has posted…

Uber’s having a rough week on both sides of the Atlantic

The UK and the US are two hugely important markets for Uber, but this week, events have conspired to frustrate the ridesharing company’s ambitions on both sides of the Atlantic. Let’s start with the UK. Earlier this week, Indian ridesharing company Ola announced plans to open shop in Britain. This would the third market the company’s entered, after launching in Australia earlier this year. Ola intends to start services in South Wales and Manchester, before eventually launching nationwide. When it arrives, it’ll offer a mixture of private-hire cars and traditional black hackney taxis. South Wales should provide rich pickings for…

John McAfee’s ‘unhackable’ cryptocurrency wallet – the one with a $250,000 bug bounty on it – has been cracked to run the iconic game DOOM, courtesy of a teenage security researcher. Video of the old-school first-person shooter has surfaced on Twitter. Self-described adversarial thinker Saleem Rashid is credited with hijacking it – a hacking prodigy just 15-years old. Keep in mind, Bitfi’s wallet is meant be the world’s first ‘unhackable’ device, supposedly doubling as a secure cryptocurrency storage solution. But as we already know, this is hardly the case. In recognition of @Bitfi6 and @officialmcafee and their prestigious @PwnieAwards accolades, we’d like to…

OPPO’s F9 phone to land later this month, and it looks gorgeous

OPPO has lifted the lid on its upcoming selfie-focused smartphone, the OPPO F9, which is due to be released later this month in Vietnam and the Philippines. As is the case with, well, pretty much every single phone release that’s happened over the past few years, the pertinent details of the F9 leaked online in the weeks prior to its official launch. According to details splashed on GeekBench, the F9 packs an octo-core MediaTek Helio P60 chipset, backed up with a respectable (but not earth-shattering) 6GB of RAM. It runs Android 8.1, which isn’t too surprising given Android 9 Pie…
