Mozilla and Unity today announced plans to bring Unity-authored games to the Web that can be played without the need to install anything other than a browser. Unity will be releasing a WebGL add-on as part of Unity 5.0 later this year, allowing millions of its developers to export their projects directly to the Web without the friction of plugins while hopefully still delivering smooth gameplay. Yet we’re sure you just want to see technology in action. As such, you’ll be happy to learn the duo is showcasing a preview of the popular game Dead Trigger 2 running in Firefox,…

Vimeo today announced it had acquired Cameo, an iPhone app for shooting, editing and sharing videos. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Vimeo says the team will continue to work on the Cameo app. It will not be shuttered, at least not for the forseeable future, and it will live alongside the Vimeo service and its dedicated mobile apps. The Cameo team will now report to Andrew Pile, the chief technology officer for Vimeo, but they won’t be contributing to any Vimeo products. As part of the deal, the startup’s co-founder and chief executive Matthew Rosenberg will transition…

It’s been a long time coming, but iSupr8, the app for creating vintage-looking videos from your smartphone from MEA Mobile, is now available for Android devices. We say it’s been a long time coming because the iOS version launched way back in 2011, before Vine even existed for your video needs and before Instagram supported videos. However, where Instagram and Vine have a limited duration (and Vine doesn’t yet have filters), iSupr8 will let you create retro classics as long as you like, plus you can do it in 1080p HD and choose from a range of film stocks that add…

You can finally play SimCity offline

Mar18

It would seem the great SimCity saga is coming to a close. After the game was plagued with connectivity problems at launch, developer Maxis is today introducing one of its most requested features: Offline play. That means more than 12 months since its launch on Windows, you can start a single-player campaign and tinker with your city offline. Save files can be reloaded at any time and you won’t have to worry about your archaic metropolis being affected by neighboring players. It’s also possible to disable autosaves, if you want the ability to pick up your progress from a specific…

Operation Windigo: 10,000 infected Linux servers redirecting half a million visitors to malware every day

Posted In: Around the Web, Insider

Security firm ESET today published a technical analysis on Linux/Ebury, an OpenSSH backdoor and credential stealer the company discovered last month. Over the last few weeks, thousands of victims have been notified that their servers were infected, and the details being released today are in an effort to raise further awareness. Dubbed Operation Windigo, the scheme runs on an infrastructure entirely hosted on compromised computers: 25,000 Linux servers in total over the last two years, with over 10,000 still infected today. The number is significant, as ESET points out, if you remember each of these systems has access to significant…
