Daily Dose News Roundup

  • Jeff Bezos’s representative just left the board of a startup that raised $1.4 billion on his name. The first truck has not been built.
  • Snap lost a 400 million dollar AI deal, 20 million dollars a month to the Iran war, and 24 per cent of its stock price. The AR glasses had better work.
  • Volkswagen just became Rivian’s biggest investor. It is not buying trucks. It is buying the software its own engineers could not build.
  • Pinterest just crossed $1 billion in quarterly revenue. The bet that made it work was not social media. It was search.

soundwave
Music taste-sharing app Soundwave, which can perhaps best be described as a mobile-first alternative to Last.fm, is coming to the desktop today by way of a Chrome extension that allows you to share what you’re listening to in your browser. Once installed, the extension picks up the tracks you play via 11 Web-based music apps, including Rdio, Spotify, Deezer and Google Play Music, and posts them to your Soundwave account for others to see via the mobile app. To get started with the Chrome extension, you’ll need to update your Soundwave mobile app (on iOS or Android) to a new…

Barnes and Noble, the bookseller behind the Nook e-reader devices and e-reader store, has announced that the Nook Press self-publishing platform is now available to authors and publishers in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium. As part of the move, Nook Press now supports multiple languages including French, Italian, German, Spanish and Dutch – authors will also be paid in their local currency, the company confirmed. Previously restricted to the US, all content that is made available via the platform will be downloadable on Nook devices or via the Nook Reading apps in all regions (where applicable). US publishers…

UK operator Three will limit data tethering to 2GB for new customers, even if the plan is ‘unlimited’

UK mobile operator Three – best known for offering unlimited data to its customers – is introducing new tariffs  for customers signing up to the network that will see the amount of data they can use while tethering limited to 2GB, even if the agreement includes ‘unlimited’ data consumption via a smartphone. The move is unlikely to win Three any fans – it was the only network to continue offering unlimited data tariffs when it switched on its 4G LTE service at the end of last year, even for customers who wanted to use that superfast connectivity to tether to…

Way back in July last year, we brought you news on Dollarbird, an awesome app for tracking your income and expenses courtesy of Halcyon Mobile. Though it has partnered with agencies, brands and startups since 2005 to produce apps, Dollarbird represented Halcyon’s first self-branded product. At the time, Dollarbird was an iOS-only affair, though the creators did state that if the reception was positive, they’d be looking to bring it to Android too. Well, it seems that the reception must’ve been positive, because Dollarbird for Android is available to download today, alongside a new Pro accounts feature that’s arriving for…
