What makes a school? Teachers, perhaps? Definitely classes. Maybe not, according to Jonathan Rochelle, Director of Product Management at Google, and the kids from the Agora School in the Netherlands. The Agora School is an interesting experiment that focuses on self-directed education. Kids are in charge of their own educational destinies. Along the way, they’re nurtured and guided by “coaches.” But does it work? You can find out later on today, when Rochelle and a panel of students from the Agora School take to TNW’s main stage. There’s plenty more where that came from. Check out the official schedule to discover the keynotes…

CHEAP: Anker’s excellent Soundcore Space NC headphones are $20 off

Anker’s Soundcore Space NC has long held a cherished place in my tech arsenal. Sure, Anker isn’t exactly an established audio brand, but these cans can hold a candle to almost any premium noise cancelling headphones in the $100 to $200 bracket. We first reviewed them in June of last year. You can read our coverage here, but I’ll recap the main points: they’re comfortable, have a solid microphone for placing calls, and the ANC (active noise cancelling) is more than capable at muting the most annoying external noises, like airplane engines and road traffic. And, in my experience, the…

Posted In: Around the Web, Hard Fork, TNW2019

At TNW2019, Francis Pouliot, CEO and co-founder of Bitcoin exchange BullBitcoin, gave a technical overview of the cryptocurrency’s network, focusing on how it works, and what it’s capable of. During his presentation, Pouliot rounded up Bitcoin’s core value and primary directives. In terms of emergent properties, Pouliot spoke about Bitcoin’s immutability, censorship-resistance, trustless validation, and self sovereignty. He also highlighted the cryptocurrency’s monetary properties, focusing on its decentralized digital scarcity, fungibility, and liquidity. Additionally, Pouliot chatted about the platform’s properties, including security, smart contracts, integration usability, and payments. Pouliot wrapped his talk by clarifying his own stance on the cryptocurrency and…

Opera: Self-sovereign identity is the next target for dapps

May10
by Sindy Cator on May 10, 2019 at 12:27 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Hard Fork, TNW2019

Margarita Khartanovic of Binary District took to the Hard Fork stage at TNW2019 this morning to talk with Charles Hamel, Opera‘s crypto product lead, and Aron Fischer, product developer for Ethereum. The topic of conversation? Realistic use cases for dapps (decentralized applications). According to Hamel, the next big dapp use case isn’t even financial, it will be identity-based. Both Hamel and Fischer agreed the industry has a long way to go before we start seeing people regularly share their identity with websites via the blockchain. Indeed, it won’t happen overnight, but what they both referred to as “self-sovereign identity” could…
