How to use AI to redefine the way we create art

May10

Historically, artists have been defined by the tools available to make their work – sculptors, painters, and music instrumentalists. Rama Allen, executive creative director of London-headquartered studio The Mill, is looking to turn that idea on its head, by using AI to create art in tandem with humans. To illustrate this at TNW2019 Conference, he cited the example of The Reeplicator, a project The Mill worked on last year. It’s essentially a live beatboxing AI that has a vocal sample bank it can use to collaborate in real-time with an artist. In this case, it’s with London-born beatboxer Reeps One.…

Google brings playable podcasts to search results

May10

At I/O 2019, Google announced that it will start including podcasts in search results so that you can listen to them right away without the need for a standalone podcast app. The feature, as of today, has gone live across both desktop and mobile web. Searching for a relevant podcast now surfaces a card of the most recent three episodes. The podcasts can be played right there by clicking the play button. But tapping on the links will take you to podcasts.google.com, offering a feed of all the episodes. Selecting ‘play’ will bring up a basic audio player, with controls…

Buzzfeed’s VP of AI: Surveillance is more than collecting data

May10
by Sindy Cator on May 10, 2019 at 2:08 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Insider, TNW2019

Companies all over the world gather a lot of data customers without thinking of the impact it might have on people in the future. Talking at TNW 2019 in Amsterdam, Gilad Lotan, Buzzfeed’s VP of data science, said that while it’s important for media companies to use machine learning, they should not collect data which can reveal personal details. “Surveillance is not only about collecting data but the act of interpreting it. Often companies track location data of people using their products, and say that they’re using it just for analytics. But they don’t realize that the same data can be used…

Larry Sanger will hide ‘blockchain’ on Everipedia to keep users comfortable

May10
by Sindy Cator on May 10, 2019 at 2:02 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, TNW2019

Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, took the Hard Fork stage at TNW2019 to reinforce the idea that user experience (UX) is a catalyst for decentralization. Sanger, now Chief Information Officer for the blockchain-powered Everipedia platform, expressed that decentralized apps (dapps) are still too difficult for most people to use. “I don’t think there’s a single dapp that’s reached the potential we expect them to have,” Sanger said. He explained the main source of this problem was an “over-focus on the blockchain tech,” and an under-focus on usability and design (or in other words, UX.) So, to spur blockchain mass-adoption — which…

The way we eat is killing the planet — here’s how tech can help

May10
by Sindy Cator on May 10, 2019 at 2:01 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Insider

As someone who gets way too excited about delicious food, it really pains me to admit that our modern diets are the largest cause of climate change and biodiversity loss in existence. While it’s usually easier to be blissfully ignorant, yesterday at TNW Conference I received the wake-up call I (reluctantly) needed. On stage was Eva Gladek, the founder and CEO of sustainability consultancy, Metabolic. Gladek made it clear that the current global food system is killing the planet — and she didn’t shy away from sharing the damage our eating habits have caused. “25-30 percent of greenhouse gases are linked…
