Watch: Sony made a God of War documentary as good as the game

Sony today debuted “God of War: Raising Kratos,” a full-length documentary chronicling the trials and triumphs of the development team behind the 2018 PlayStation 4 smash hit. It’s a wonderful peek behind the curtain at the wizardry that goes into making a seminal video game. And, best of all, it’s free on YouTube. Last year’s reimagined God of War game was absolutely adored by critics, receiving near universal praise. And it flew off shelves (or into download queues, as the case may be) to become one of the best-selling titles of the year. TNW called it the best action/adventure game…

Twitter tears into Delta for its tone-deaf anti-union, pro-video game poster

Delta Airlines is passing around anti-union posters comparing union dues to the price of a new console, implying the latter will bring employees more joy than the former. And this particular message is uniting both gamers and pro-union labor leaders in a single message: WTF, Delta? The message, a poster emblazoned with a non-brand-specific controller, was spotted by Common Dreams writer Eoin Higgins. It reads, “Union dues cost around $700 a year. A new video game system with the latest hits sounds like fun. Put your money towards that instead of paying dues to the union.” At the bottom is a…

Tineco’s new smart vacuum should make you reconsider that Dyson

When I reviewed Dyson’s V10 last year, I finally understood why people were willing to pay such a premium for the company’s vacuums. But testing Tineco’s Pure One S12 the past couple of weeks has been a reminder that there are versatile alternatives that give you more for your money. The S12 comes four packages, ranging from $449 at the entry level to $699 for the most goodies thrown in; I tested the $599 configuration. My first thought was that it looked a lot like a Dyson with a white coat of paint. Like the new Dyson V11, the S12’s headline…

‘Failosophy’ author on why failure leads to success

May10
by Sindy Cator on May 10, 2019 at 8:07 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, TNW2019

Speaking today at The Next Web’s 2019 conference, author and futurist Gabe Zichermann gave an account of various industries that got stronger through failures, rather than successes. As he put it, sometimes you have to fail in order to find the success — and there are several examples of industries and people who made their failures work to their advantage. One in particular stood out for just how many failures had to happen before it became what it is today: namely, the aviation industry. Zichermann pointed out, the aviation industry is, for the most part, very safe, and has been…

Oops! Scientists accidentally create new material that makes batteries charge much faster

May10
by Sindy Cator on May 10, 2019 at 5:00 pm

Some of the most famous scientific discoveries happened by accident. From Teflon and the microwave oven to penicillin, scientists trying to solve a problem sometimes find unexpected things. This is exactly how we created phosphorene nanoribbons – a material made from one of the universe’s basic building blocks, but that has the potential to revolutionize a wide range of technologies. We’d been trying to separate layers of phosphorus crystals into two-dimensional sheets. Instead, our technique created tiny, tagliatelle-like ribbons one single atom thick and only 100 or so atoms across, but up to 100,000 atoms long. We spent three years…
