Quotable

"House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., announced his temporary resignation as committee chairman, March 3, 2010, on Capitol Hill, due to charges that he violated ethics and was corrupt. It probably did not help that he was made chairman of the committee for his promise to end the "culture of corruption" in Washington, DC." ~ Yasha Harari

Lytro is back with a new light-field camera, called the Illum, aimed at hobbyist and professional photographers alike. Unlike its predecessor, the device looks like a full-frame digital SLR with a wide, protruding lens and chunky body. It boasts a custom 40-megaray light-field sensor, with an 8x optical zoom lens that can shoot at up 1/4000 of a second and an f/2.0 aperture. The unique sensor captures numerous characteristics of light rays, including their color, intensity and direction. The result is an image that feels 3D – viewers can subtly shift their perspective and also manually set the focal point….

Apple Reports Quarterly Earnings
After launching a website and video detailing its environmental efforts, Apple has today followed up with a related newspaper advert that indirectly mocks its rival Samsung. At the top of the page, the company has placed a huge headline that reads: “There are some ideas we want every company to copy.” While many firms are considered guilty of copying Apple’s software and hardware innovations, the timing of the advert clearly points to its ongoing patent trial with Samsung. Artists are often envisioning the future within their work—and architectural visionaries are often designing dwellings, offices, and other structures made from improbable points of perspective. The five artists below use photography and illustration to play with architectural spaces and lines—both real and imagined—and create inspiring images about structure. casper-1
Plenty of startups are interested in tracking your sleep, but Casper is working from the bottom up with the launch of a re-engineered mattress and an innovative distribution model for it. Mattress buying is one of the few consumer experiences that remains extremely unpleasant. There are too many choices, pricing is frustrating and getting a mattress back to your home is a feat. The Casper team has rethought the whole process. Designers with experience at Sealy, IDEO and Muji created the mattress using a combination of memory foam and latex foam. To cut down on customer confusion, the company only…

Mailbird, the desktop email client designed for Windows 8, Windows 7 and XP machines, has gained a new feature today designed to speed up the daily trawl through your inbox. With apps like Spritz hitting the headlines, helped along by coming pre-loaded on Samsung’s range-topping Galaxy S5 smartphone, it was inevitable that a desktop client would also try and deliver a similar experience, which is exactly what Mailbird’s new speed reading option does.
