Apple reportedly close to acquiring Beats Electronics for as much as $3.2b

A new report from Financial Times claims that Apple is close to signing a $3.2 billion acquisition deal for Beats Electronics that would bring both its headphones business and its new streaming music service into the fold. The agreement has yet to be finalized, but the report claimed that an announcement could come as early as next week. The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and re/code have corroborated the report. If true, the acquisition would be an unusually large one for Apple, which has tended to avoid billion-dollar deals. Apple CEO Tim Cook did tell the Journal in February that…

Twitter updates its Web layout with a third column for content recommendation

Twitter is rolling out an update that will add a third column for users accessing the service from a Web browser. The new layout moves the “Who to follow” widget from beneath your profile bio and Trends to the rightmost section – putting your tweets front and center. The addition of the third, rightmost column keeps the layout in tune with Twitter’s new, full-sized layout that centralizes the tweets with secondary information off to the sides. Those who have yet to update to the new profile layout may see a third column show up like the screenshot below. ➤ We’re updating twitter.com with…

Box announced today that its Notes service has emerged from beta and will roll out to all users by early June. Once the feature has been added to your account, a Notes button should appear in your dashboard. Notes includes options for formatting, annotations and collaboration. Box said it has been using the feature internally for company-wide notices, weekly engineering updates, marketing plans, FAQs and press releases. Box launched Notes last September in an effort to round out its cloud storage offering to compete with the likes of Google Docs, Evernote, and Quip. ➤ Box Notes is here! Paul Adams is the VP of Product at Intercom, previously at Facebook and Google. This post originally appeared on the Intercom blog. The reshuffles in management in Google+ recently attracted a lot of press comment and speculation. I thought it an appropriate time to look back on the last couple of years and see what broader product lessons we can learn from the inception, launch and evolution of Google+. Note that whilst I worked on the original Google+ team and invented the ideas behind Circles, I have long since left, and have no insider knowledge about what is happening, nor does this…

Twitter’s ‘The ultimate guide to photo sharing’ aims to convince you to post your pics

Over the past few months, Twitter has made several major updates to photo sharing on its platform in hopes of countering the assumption that the service is used mostly for text. Now, the company has created “The ultimate guide to photo sharing on Twitter” to list the features it has added. The guide highlights the camera functionality in the Twitter apps, photo filters, multiple photos, photo tagging, DM photos and cropping. Twitter took a big step toward making its service more visual last October when it added image previews for photos and Vines. New profile pages for users also bring…
