Two days after releasing the stable version of Chrome 35, Google has announced the release of Chrome 36 beta for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Much like Chrome 35 beta, the new features have a developer focus, especially for those building Web content and apps for mobile devices. That being said, Google does say this release has a revamped Chrome app launcher for Linux (smaller font size and smarter positioning). As for developers, the highlights are the additions of element.animate(), HTML Imports, Object.observe(), as well as an improved throttled async touchmove model (a full list of changes can be seen in…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
People make a lot of excuses not to exercise regularly. “I hurt my knee running the other day,” “I don’t have enough time,” “I hate going to the gym.” If you’ve ever uttered any iteration of the aforementioned phrases, Peloton Cycle wants to help. Peloton is an indoor cycling bike that is equipped with Wi-Fi and a HD touchscreen display so you can stream live classes or access them on-demand. Co-founded by John Foley, formerly Barnes & Noble, Evite, and CitySearch, Peloton raised more than $300,000 on Kickstarter last year in its attempt to bring the spinning craze into your home. For those…

Screen Shot.17 AM
Pixelmator, long considered the best and most feature-rich alternative to subscription-based Adobe Photoshop, has released version 3.2 Sandstone. Available today on Apple’s App Store, it features a new repair tool, 16-bits per channel support, and Lock Layers functionality. The app has a completely overhauled repair tool to remove unwanted elements within an image. The tool now offers three options: quick, standard, and advanced repairs. These choices combine algorithms specifically for removing small or large objects from smooth or complex backgrounds and use four times less memory than the previous version, the company says. With the previous 3.1 version, Pixelmator added 16-bit performance, meaning…

US-IT-CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW-CES
Augmented reality company Metaio has announced today that it is working on a system called ‘Thermal Touch’ which allows people using Google Glass-like wearable technology to turn any surface around them info a usable interface. The company said that by combining an infrared image with a regular camera (currently achieved in the prototype by running them in tandem on a tablet), it could track the heat signature left when someone touches a surface. Combine this with digitally overlaid augmented reality and computer vision, and you have an all-new touch interface, anywhere you like. “Imagine pushing directions to your device simply by touching a static…

crowd looking up
Thijs Suijten and Menno Luiten are the co-founder and developer for Famatic. Every startup needs money. How to get that initial investment is where there is a choice: find a suitable investor, bootstrap, or use the power of the crowd to get that ball rolling. We loved the idea of the latter; not only would we get the investment to cover the costs of the initial production run, we could also gain incredible insight from our actual customers. We had to focus on the value we provide to our potential customers. It matched our mental model of “being lean” – we were not…
