Apple today announced a new programming language called Swift at WWDC, which will replace Objective C as the language developers use for building iOS and OS X apps. Craig Federighi announced the new language on stage saying, “We’ve used Objective-C for 20 years, and we love it. But we wondered what we could do without the baggage of C.” Federighi confirmed that Swift code and C can live in the same app together, too, so developers can upgrade their code as they go, rather than replacing it in one go. There are a number of changes from Objective C, some of which are detailed…

Never letting an opportunity slip by to tweak its photo tools, Apple announced a new Photos app for iOS that will eventually make its way to the Mac. As revealed at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference keynote, the new Photos lets you share edits and organization across all devices with updates and tweaks syncing in real time. Both Photos apps will integrate with the newly priced iCloud storage to offer more accessible browsing, searching and retouching. The iOS app stores all photos on all devices via the new iCloud Photo Library while preserving your organization across devices and operating systems. Your device has access to all your…

The connected Internet of Things smart home offering from Apple has emerged from the shadows of WWDC and it’s called HomeKit. While it’s not the industry leading move many had hoped for, it’s a first step into an industry that hasn’t evolved beyond early adopters.   Apple is working with a number of home automation developers, including Honeywell, Philips, Withings, Haier and more. Unfortunately HomeKit doesn’t work most of the systems already on the market. Apple did announce partnerships with HomeKit. It’s also worth mentioning that HomeKit won’t be available until iOS 8 launches this fall. Until then, you’ll have to continue using your…
