Apple dropped a huge surprise at WWDC on Monday, as it announced that it’s built a new programming language for iOS and OS X called Swift. The new language — which is in beta until iOS 8 is released – is Apple’s replacement for Objective-C and the company explained its big decision to developers by claiming it is much faster and easier to use. Apple isn’t taking away support for the old language and applications can actually have codebases that contain both Swift and Objective-C happily. Feedback on Twitter has been mixed, with many praising Apple for dropping the aging Objective-C (it’s over 20 years old)…

Apple held its latest Apple Design Awards today after its WWDC conference, recognizing iOS and Mac apps which it feels offer the best experience from a design, usability and technology standpoint. This year’s winners include Yahoo News Digest, Storehouse, Sky Guide, Monument Valley and others. Yahoo News Digest Yahoo’s News Digest app is based on Summly’s technology, a company Yahoo acquired last year. It delivers news roundups twice a day. SwiftKey, Fleksy and Swype keyboards are all coming to iOS 8

Well that didn’t take long. After this morning’s announcement that Apple would support third-party keyboards in iOS 8, the three big players in the space have announced that they will be bringing their keyboards to the next iPhone operating system. SwiftKey, Fleksy and Swype have announced plans to bring their touch-typing offerings to iOS. SwiftKey and Fleksy announced their plans on their sites, while Swype was shown off on stage at the event and the the company shared its excitement about Apple’s keyboard plans with GeekWire. John Oliver’s hilarious plea for trolls to defend net neutrality overloads the FCC’s comment system

Comedian John Oliver’s recent monologue about net neutrality manages to be both funny and informative at the same time. It’s definitely worth a watch, especially if you’re unclear about the issue. At the end of his bit, Oliver launches into an impassioned plea directed at internet trolls. He calls on them to redirect their anger and take time away from commenting on YouTube videos to send comments to the FCC about its proposed net neutrality guidelines. So far, it looks like Oliver has succeeded, as the FCC sent a couple tweets this afternoon acknowledging that “heavy traffic” had resulted in technical difficulties…
