7Detail
Internetopia, a massive, crowdsourced Web drawing by artist Benjamin Redford, started out as an experiment to envision what physical streets and avenues of cyberspace might look like. It ended up as something way more complicated: an interior snapshot of its participants’ collective imagination. Some 220 people heeded Redford’s Kickstarter call to share their thoughts by reserving a cube of space on a communal drawing and telling the artist what they wanted him to draw. Each cube cost $1. People could reserve as many cubes as they wanted. No drawing request was rejected. Internetopia reached its $2,000 goal in under 24 hours — as the tally rose an astonishing…

Daryl Lang is the Managing Editor for the Shutterstock Blog. This post was originally published on the Shutterstock blog and has been reprinted with permission. What an age we live in! It boggles the mind to imagine what our ancestors would have made of the marvelous technology we enjoy every day. Progress is a tremendous force for good. And yet, photography has changed irreversibly. Gone are the days of hefty wooden cameras, painfully long exposures, and noxious darkroom chemicals. Now that so many people carry around devices that can take thousands of pictures and transmit them anywhere instantly, has the medium lost its significance? Was…

Airbnb'S Value Estimated At $10 Billion After New Round Of Investments
There are already listings on Airbnb for properties in Chinese cities, but the site doesn’t have an official presence in China. This means that there haven’t been any marketing efforts, people on the ground to speak with regulators, or a stringent quality check of the places that are posted up on Airbnb. That marketing bit is going to change for sure. Airbnb quietly inked a partnership with Alibaba-backed outbound travel site Qyer late last week, and the cooperation initiatives outlined include online and offline activities, joint marketing efforts, and exhibitions to promote tourism destinations. Airbnb’s head of global operations, Varsha…

Morocco
Here’s my roundup of some of the most important or interesting regional entrepreneurial news that happened in the last month. As always, if you’d like to draw my attention to an important regional story, please contact me on Twitter (@startupegypt) or by e-mail at omar@talkinsense.com. And a quick word of advice for those that contact me, I’m more likely to follow-up with those that make life easy for me, so include stats and info in the email body and cut out the fat. It’s tedious reading press-release attachments telling me how great the CEO or CMO is. Rant over. Investment…

Opera has released the latest version of its desktop browser for Windows and Mac today. With Opera 22, the Norwegian firm has introduced five new themes that “showcase the local scenery” from Norway. “They complement Opera and add a touch of Scandinavian style to your desktop,” the company continues. Opera typically rolls out new versions fairly frequently, with the previous incarnation landing less than a month ago. With that in mind, the latest refresh brings a new ‘silent-update’ feature to Windows users, which basically means you no longer have to suffer update dialogs while you’re browsing the Web. Opera says…
