Wuaki.tv, the fledgling movie and TV streaming platform owned by Japanese internet powerhouse Rakuten, has partnered with Microsoft to launch a new dedicated app for Windows 8.1. The service, which is only available in the UK, Spain and Andorra for now, offers two different payment options: unlimited streaming with a monthly subscription, similar to Netflix, or the option to rent and purchase digital titles individually, akin to iTunes or Amazon Instant Video. The Windows 8.1 app brings HD quality movies and TV shows to Windows 8.1 machines, and is in addition to its existing apps for mobiles, tablets, consoles and…

The BBC reveals 4K broadcast trials for the FIFA World Cup

Posted In: Around the Web, Insider

While we already knew that the 2014 football World Cup was to be produced and broadcast in 4K, thanks to a tie-up between Sony and FIFA, the BBC has announced its very own Ultra HD (UHD) plans for the tournament. Unlike Sony’s efforts, which will receive some public exposure, the BBC’s endeavors will be entirely closed trials. The broadcaster’s Research & Development arm will cover three games from the Maracanã stadium in Rio – a last 16 match, a quarter-final game and the final itself. It will work with research partner, Arqiva, consumer electronics companies and other technology providers, as…

Good news for Three subscribers: You’ll soon be able to use your domestic monthly bundle, including texts, calls and data, in five more countries without incurring any extra charges. The UK mobile network has operated its Feel at Home scheme for a while already, and was previously available to Brits traveling in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Macau, Republic of Ireland, Sri Lanka, Sweden, and the US. It basically means that whatever plan you’re signed up to in the UK, it works exactly the same when you travel to one of Three’s partner countries, so you don’t have…

The football (soccer) World Cup starts this month in Brazil, and Google is stepping up to the plate after adding the tournament’s 12 designated stadiums to its Street View service. In addition to 360 degree panoramas of the legendary Maracana and other stadiums, Google has added directions and turn-by-turn routing to plan journeys to the stadiums, and put Brazil’s famed street paintings on Street View. The World Cup-themed additions are the undoubted highlight of this Street View update, but Google has also added imagery from “hundreds” of other sites across Brazil — including national parks — and new content from neighboring Latin American…
