Samsung and Barnes & Noble are joining forces to build co-branded tablets. That’s right, the result of this partnership will mean you’ll be able to buy a co-branded Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook tablet, meshing Samsung’s hardware with customized Nook software. This means you’ll get a reading-focused Android tablet that directs you to Barnes & Noble’s arsenal of three million digital books, magazines and newspapers. Last June, we reported that Barnes & Noble was ceasing to make its own Nook tablets, moving to a partner-centric model instead. Though that hasn’t stopped its competitors from launching their own tablets designed for…

Square wants to further embed itself in your business. The payment company is adding free invoicing to its register service. Square Invoices ties directly to the Square account of a business. Sellers can send unlimited invoices to suppliers without a monthly fee. But, like the register service, Square will levy a 2.75% transaction fee on all transactions. The company hopes that invoicing through its system will reduce taking payments over the phone and make keeping track of invoices easier for small businesses because it’s tied to the same system used to collect sales. This continues Square’s path towards becoming a one-stop shop…

Twitter acquires Namo Media to boost its native ads offering

Twitter has acquired a number of startups recently, and the latest is a native mobile ad specialist called Namo Media. The startup helps developers run native in-stream ads in the midst of their app, creating revenue opportunities and an experience that wasn’t off-putting to new and existing users. Namo Media offers “adaptive templates” which are essentially modules that developers could customise to their liking. The closer the ad looks to the rest of the app, the higher the probability that a user will actually stop and engage. If that in turn generates more ‘taps’ from users, advertisers and ad networks…

Shrturl.co: You’ll never trust a shortened URL again

Shrturl
We always like it when our people work on their own projects and hobbies. Hacking cool stuff together is in our DNA and how most of the companies that make up The Next Web got started. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that our talented designer Alexander Griffioen built a cool little tool on his own time. What it does is slightly more surprising, or worrying, depending on who you ask. Shrturl.co is a shortener that allows you to edit the page that its shortened URLs link to. It works like this: you visit shrturl.co, enter a page URL…

Google Play for Education now lets US schools add up to 5 student accounts to each tablet

Posted In: Around the Web, Google, Insider

More than six months ago, Google Play for Education was officially unveiled for tablets, as the internet giant sought to tackle Apple’s K-12 market share with cheap apps and tablets. And today, Google has announced it’s introducing support for multiple accounts to tablets under the scheme. To recap, Google Play for Education is basically Google Play, but curated specifically for kids by teachers, with apps sorted by age and genre. This means you can find science-based applications that are appropriate for specific age groups, while it also contains educational videos and classic books for the classroom. It remains a US-only initiative…
