Microsoft is so confident in its Surface Pro 3 that it’s billing the device as a viable replacement for your MacBook Air. A new promotion from the company is making that replacement quite literal by offering customers up to $650 in trade-in value for their MacBook Air units if they purchase the new Surface Pro. The deal runs until July 31 and can’t be combined with other offers. Since the base Surface Pro 3 starts at $799, you’ll still have to shell out at least $150 to make the switch. Here’s Microsoft’s own comparison sheet for the two products: The…

After acquiring Aviate earlier this year, Yahoo today released the Android homescreen service out of beta. The service, available only in English at the moment, aggregates your personal and local data to your device’s homescreen to help organize your day. Some of the data you’ll see on the homescreen includes weather forecasts, email shortcuts, transit information and calendar. The service will adjust information displayed according to time of day and your calendar appointments to anticipate your next moves. Aviate can also list your most popular contacts under Favorites to make every action less than two clicks away. Additionally, the service will display twice-daily news…

Facebook updated its Pages Manager iOS app to version 4.0 today, adding the ability to edit posts directly from within the app. The What’s New notes for the update mention that the app has a “new, streamlined look,” easier access to activity and insights, information about which admin is posting to the page and the ability to post threaded replies to comments. Facebook’s main iOS and Android apps got support for editing last year. Earlier this year, the company began allowing verified pages to edit link and text posts, in addition to photo posts. ➤ Facebook Pages Manager | iOS

Facebook’s News Feed ranking algorithm now considers how long you watch videos

Jun23
by Sindy Cator on June 23, 2014 at 5:23 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Insider

Facebook announced today changes to the video ranking algorithm for News Feed. From now on, the company will include whether video clips uploaded to personal accounts and Pages are watched and how long they’re watched when it calculates whether to show the content to others. As a result, users that tend to watch more frequently will have more videos surfaced in their feed. If you regularly skip over video uploads, you’ll start seeing them less. Other factors that Facebook looks at when ranking video posts include comments, likes and shares. Links to third-party video sites won’t be affected by the…
