Quotable

"U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said publicly that the United States would not intervene in Syria, because the American Congress views second generation Syrian dictator Bashar Assad as a reformer. Is that because his live ammunition is reformed, or because his state sponsorship of terrorism and repressive abuse of human rights and free speech are so humanitarian?" ~ Yasha Harari

We’ve known for some time that Japanese messaging app Line has very creative ways of engaging its 450 million-plus registered users — it arguably pioneered the concept of stickers and subsequently kicked off the idea of democratizing stickers on its platform by setting up a marketplace for anyone to create and sell their own stickers. These ways to engage users have also led to a solid stream of revenue. Line sells over $10 million worth of stickers per month. However, though most people think of stickers when it comes to Line, games connected to the app are the key revenue maker. They typically account for around 60 percent of…

Nest, the company bought by Google for $3.2 billion, has opened its developer program to allow other apps and services to tap into its smart smoke alarms, thermostats and other home tech products it launches in the future. “What we’re doing is making it possible for your Nest devices to securely interact with the things you already use every day. Things like lights, appliances, fitness bands and even cars. Because when we make connections between these different parts of your life, we can create personalized experiences that do even more to keep you comfortable and safe,” the company writes on its…

RunKeeper steps up its focus on Asia by adding Chinese and Korean languages to its Android app

Popular GPS fitness-tracking app RunKeeper has boosted its Android app with support for two key Asian languages — Chinese and Korean — as it seeks to capture a larger slice of the health and fitness pie in the region. There are also plans to add the languages into the iOS app in the near future. RunKeeper has over 30 million users, more than two-thirds of whom are outside the US, which makes the introduction of new languages a natural move, particularly as the company steps further into providing personal guidance and motivation for its users. The app has offered users training…

The G3, LG’s new flagship smartphone, will go on sale worldwide from June 27 — this coming Friday — beginning in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines, the company has announced. The next phase will see the device reach Asia, Europe, the Middle East and other regions at various points in July. The device has been available to customers in LG’s native Korea since last month — the company says the phone has made a “strong debut,” but it did not provide specific sales figures. We put the device through its paces in May and were impressed by its solid camera performance, sleek design and…
