A protester attempted to grab the limelight during the Google I/O keynote today, calling on Google to “develop a conscience.” Google security quickly removed the agitator from the room, but she managed to get in a few yells and distract the presenter before being stopped. Judging from the protester’s sign, she was attempting to call attention to an eviction complaint related to Google’s head of E-discovery, Jack Halprin. In April, activists gathered outside Halprin’s house to accuse him of using “illegal methods” to evict tenants from a property in San Francisco. The attempt follows yesterday’s Occupy Google protests at the company’s headquarters,…

Google has revealed a new program called Android One which will specify a set of hardware and software guidelines for device makers to adhere to if they wish to attain official ‘Android One’ status. Announced today at Google’s I/O conference, Android One guidelines are open to all device makers but are really intended to help cut down on the cost and time required to build an affordable smartphone in a short space of time. For the end user, Android One will mean a more unified Android experience free from manufacturer’s own skins, like TouchWiz or Sense, fewer pre-installed apps and timely software updates. Essentially, the software…

US-IT-SAN FRANCISCO-GOOGLE-DEVELOPER CONFERENCE
As promised in a Bloomberg Businessweek interview, Google today showcased the next version of Android during its I/O keynote. The new interface sports what Google calls “material design,” a new aesthetic that will be adopted for all of its offerings on mobile, desktop and other hardware platforms. The interface looks flatter than before, with blocks of color and minimal outlines for its preferred fonts. Everything has been redesigned with simplicity in mind. The navigation bar at the bottom of Android, for instance, now has three simple shapes – a triangle, circle and square – to denote basic system functions. Animations…

Earlier today, the fate of Aereo’s free-to-air broadcast TV service was finally clarified: According to the US Supreme Court, it violates the Copyright Act. Aereo CEO and founder Chet Kanojia has now made an official statement on the outcome, noting that today’s decision is “a massive setback for the American consumer,” while adding that it “sends a chilling message to the technology industry.” In terms of what comes next, Kanojia seems to indicate that they will fight on, though doesn’t specify to what degree or in what capacity. “We are disappointed in the outcome, but our work is not done,”…

Google announced at its I/O developer conference that it now boasts over 1 billion monthly-active users on its Android platform. That’s up from a 538 million figure from last year’s I/O. 1 billion #Android devices out in the world. That’s something like 93 million selfies taken every day … give or take #io14 — A Googler (@google) June 25, 2014 Previously, Google measured Android usage in terms of total device activations, but it’s now switching to a 30-day-active stat. Last September, Google announced reaching 1 billion total activations. The firm celebrated hitting the 900 million mark last May. Android app installs have…
