hangouts
Danny Schreiber is a marketer at Zapier. This post originally appeared on the Zapier blog. As a remote team of 12, we’ve come to depend on Google Hangout video calls for our weekly standup meetings. The tool is free, quick to access and familiar to everyone on the team. Though like any other video conferencing software, Hangouts comes with hangups. Can you hear me? Can you invite my other Gmail account? If you use Hangouts, you’ve been there (or soon will be there). And when that day comes you’re googling incessantly looking for the answer. Hopefully, you’ll need to search no more. The following Google…

Google Opens New Berlin Office
Google today announced plans to shut down Orkut, its first attempt at building a social network. The platform will be formally closed on September 30, after which users will be unable to log in or export their photo albums to Google+. Orkut grew out  of Google’s 20 percent initiative, which allowed employees to use a fifth of their working week on side projects. Of course, the social network has since been supplanted by Google+, a more ambitious service that ties into many of Google’s other products. The decision to close Orkut is therefore hardly surprising – the fact it took so…

Whyd
From ambient audio-sharing apps to free, unlimited storage for all your mobile photos, we covered a lot of ground with new iOS apps in June. So by way of a quick recap and, of course, to help you filter through the debris, here’s our pick of the newbies from the past month. OverHeard OverHeard is a fiendishly simple sound-sharing app that wants to do for audio what Vine did for video. It ambiently records and preserves up to three minutes of sound wherever you are, then starts again, deleting the previous audio segment in the process. The upshot? You always…

Posted In: Apps, Around the Web, Product Updates

Apple will be updating its iTunes U catalog of educational materials to make it easier to manage courses directly from an iPad. Announced today, the update will also allow teachers to create courses on an iPad and add additional content and learning materials, without ever needing to put the tablet down. On the student side, the update brings students new collaboration features, including an option to kick-off class discussions and ask questions from an iPad. Students will also be able to set up push notifications when new topics are started or they’re tagged in a reply. Naturally, teachers retain the right to…
