yosemite
As promised, Apple has launched the public beta program for OS X Yosemite, the next version of its desktop OS. Apple’s only accepting 1 million people into the program, so you’ll need to snag a spot if you haven’t signed up already. Once you have your code, redeem it on Mac App Store to download the beta. Apple recommends that you back up your hard drive, since this is pre-release software. You’ll also need OS X Mavericks 10.9, 2GB of memory and 8GB of free disk space. The beta site is experiencing some issues at the moment, so give it a…

It seems to be the week for updates from companies we first heard from at last year’s TNW Europe Conference. Following on from the launch of Tyba, food tracking and advice app, Nutrino for iPhone, has today hit version 2.0. New in this version is the ability to set health goals (like losing weight or gaining muscle mass) and have the app tailor its recommendations to help you achieve those goals. You can also log exercise, get food recommendations based on activities detected by on-device sensors and take tests to get a feel for your ‘heart age’ and risk of getting…

Google has today announced that paying users of its Maps Engine Pro custom mapping service can now access its Google Maps Coordinate workforce management and productivity tools at no additional cost. The Coordinate mobile and Web app is designed to allow teams to easily share locations and assign jobs in real-time by using data visualizations on maps. As well as including Maps Coordinate with Engine Pro subscriptions, priced at $5 per user per month, Google has opened up the Coordinate app to anyone with a Google account, meaning it’s no longer only available to Google Apps customers, thereby massively expanding its potential user base….

Yelp’s Trends tool lets you compare data from over 57m reviews to see what’s hot around the world

Yelp has launched a new ‘Trends’ tool which allows users to enter search terms to compare 10 years of historical review data from around the world. Given the rich mass of information that Yelp holds in its millions of reviews, it makes sense that it’s putting it to some use, although this is just intended as a bit of fun designed to end arguments and help you search out interesting data points. “Are Londoners loving bob hairstyles or feeling more fringe (that’s bangs, for you Americans) these days? And every city has its favorite food trucks now, but where did this meals-on-wheels…

Google updates Hangouts on Air to help brands promote merchandise and related products

2014-07-24
Google today unveiled Showcase, a new Hangouts on Air app that allows broadcasters and brands to easily promote merchandise and related content. In particular, Google’s live streaming tool has become a popular way for the movie industry to host Q&A sessions with a group of actors and actresses. In this scenario, the tool could be used to promote theater tickets on Fandango, the latest trailer on YouTube or the film’s official website. Furthermore, music artists could use it to share their Google+ page or new records in the Google Play store. It follows the company’s experiments with “shoppable” Hangouts on…
