Payments processor Square has announced that it now supports IFTTT integrations, allowing sellers to set-up triggers that can help to streamline their business operations when taking or sending payments. For example, sellers can create IFTTT ‘recipes’ for things like automatically sending a congratulatory email to employees, logging all transactions to a spreadsheet or receiving a weekly digest of the week’s refunds. If you don’t fancy creating your own recipe, Square’s IFTTT channel has more than 70 to get you started. With small business owners often carrying out many of the daily duties of running a business themselves, anything that can…

If there was any lingering questions around whether there is a market for monthly ebook subcriptions, Amazon surely went some way towards answering them when it introduced its $9.99 ‘all-you-can-read’ Kindle Unlimited plan last week. While this raised many concerns around the implications for authors’ monetization, it will also have piqued the interest of existing players in the field – one of which is Oyster, the oft-called Netflix for ebooks. While Amazon’s monthly subscription serves up 600,000 ebooks for $9.99, Oyster delivers 500,000 books for $9.95 a month. However, it’s reported that the vast majority of the titles available on…

Lingua.ly‘s language learning mobile app is now available to download for the iPhone, following its release on Android back in April this year and its launch on the Web just a few weeks back. The company said that in the month following its Android launch, the app attracted more than 100,000 downloads and that it expects at least this amount (or more)of new downloads now that it is available for iOS devices. It added that it plans to introduce support for more languages this fall, but didn’t specify exactly which. Like on the other platforms, the iOS app provides users with a…

Soundtracker adds personalization and auto-discovery tools to its social internet radio app

Social internet radio platform Soundtracker has added new features which promise to make it far easier to discover new music and personalize the service to your own musical taste. Available now, the updated iOS and Android apps allow greater customization of each station- such as allowing for specific artists, tracks or albums to be added or removed – and also promises “auto-discovery” of new music as users “move around through the day”. The newly discovered tracks can then be used as a jump-off point to find out more information about the artist or song, find YouTube videos, start a new Soundtracker…

Kakao Talk takes a leaf from Skype, bringing free calls to its Windows desktop app

Kakao Talk, the mobile messaging company that’s undergoing a $3 billion merger in its native Korea, is taking a leaf out of the Skype playbook after it introduced free voice calls to its Windows app. The company added calls to its mobile apps back in 2012. Voice calls are supported in one-on-one conversations, and also in groups with up to five participants. In addition to free calling, Kakao Talk has also rolled out a design with new fonts, which lets users customize their chatrooms with themes, as they can on the mobile apps. The company’s Windows app launched in June 2013, with…
