Uber today announced UberPool, an experimental ridesharing service that could cut costs by as much as 40 percent compared to its UberX offering. The service is currently in limited beta in the San Francisco Bay Area and will roll out to more users on August 15. Google employees will also get early access to it. With UberPool, the company will attempt to match you up with another rider that’s headed in your direction. The app will tell you the first name of the other rider and which one of you is getting picked up first. If it can’t find a match, Uber will offer…

In a reversal of earlier reports, it looks like Sprint has decided to table its acquisition of T-Mobile according to The Wall Street Journal’s sources. With backing from its parent company Softbank, Sprint was reportedly to be interested in purchasing T-Mobile in a deal that at one point was reported to be $40 a share. Also, according to Bloomberg, Sprint CEO, Dan Hesse is out and the carrier could be announcing a new CEO as early as tomorrow. Sprint sent…

The New York Times has a doozy of a security report today detailing what’s believed to be the largest collection of Internet identity theft. Based on research from security firm Hold Security, a Russian gang has compromised 420,000 websites in order to collect roughly 540 million unique email addresses. To make matters worse, most of the affected websites still remain vulnerable, according to the Hold Security founder Alex Holden. A Times source did say that “some big companies” have been informed that their data is among the trove. The criminal group is suspected of using the information to post spam…

Twitter today updated its Vine for iOS app with new features and support for more languages. You can download the new version now directly from Apple’s App Store. The biggest improvement comes in the form of better controls over notifications, which you receive via push notifications and in the Activity tab. You can now customize both (but not separately) by accessing the Notifications menu in Settings. There’s also a new badge that shows the number of unread activity items and unread VMs right in the app’s icon. The share screen has been revamped to let you post a Vine publicly…
