What the ‘Learn to Code’ movement is forgetting: Existing developers

programming

Gregg Pollack is founder of Code School, an online learning destination for developers that teaches through entertaining content. The latest learn-to-code movement has brought on a wave of interest in programming across the board—from kids to working professionals. It’s a positive and necessary shift, considering software development jobs expected to grow 22 percent by 2022: a rise that’s significantly higher than any other occupation on average and a great sign for the tech industry as a whole. However, I’ve started to wonder if by focusing so much on learning code, we’re losing focus on how to support one of our most important assets…

The US government suspects a new leaker has emerged after Snowden

US government officials have revealed to CNN that they’re operating under the assumption that a new whistleblower has started leaking national security documents, following in the footsteps of Edward Snowden. The metaphorical smoking gun, in this case, is The Intercept’s report on a US database of terrorist suspects. Since documents from that report are dated after Snowden left the US, it’s reasonable to assume that a new leaker is involved. The government has had a tough time figuring out which documents Snowden took with him, so adding another source to the mix should keep officials busy. Hopefully, they’ll be too…

The FCC may reclassify US broadband as 10 Mbps and up

The US Federal Communications Commission has proposed (PDF) an update to the definition of “broadband” from a minimum download rate of 4 Mbps to 10 Mbps, Reuters reports. With the proposal, the FCC is seeking comment on the state of broadband deployment in the US, especially as it relates to expansion into often-overlooked rural areas. The comment period will run until September 4, with a reply comment period to follow until September 19. The commission notes in its report that the rise of VoIP and video on demand services has ramped up the amount of bandwidth consumers require from their…
