Microsoft today updated its by the Numbers webpage to note that the Windows Phone Store has now passed 300,000 apps, as pointed out by WPCentral. We reached out to the company to confirm the figure. “We have more than 300,000 Windows Phone apps today and the Windows Phone Store continues to grow,” a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed with TNW. “In the past year alone the Windows and Windows Phone app catalog has grown 94%, while the number of active developers has grown by 50%.” When asked when exactly the milestone was reached, we were told the data “is as of end…

Yahoo follows Google with plans to support end-to-end email encryption this fall

Yahoo announced today at the Black Hat security conference that it will introduce an optional end-to-end encryption setup for its email service this fall, according to The Wall Street Journal. Google showed off a PGP-based encryption plugin for Gmail back in June. Forbes reports that Yahoo will modify the plugin for its own service. This would allow users that have the plugin installed to communicate securely between Gmail and Yahoo accounts. Skype retires Windows Phone 7 app, recommends canceling any subscriptions to avoid being billed

In June, Skype announced plans to retire old versions of its Windows and Mac clients “over the next few months,” and then expanded the move in July to “all platforms” along with another vague “in the near future” timeframe. What the company didn’t say, however, is that some old platforms require these old versions, meaning some Skype users are essentially being dropped. In a support page titled “Is Skype for Windows Phone 7 being discontinued?,” the Microsoft-owned company answers the question with a “yes” and elaborates that it is “permanently retiring all Skype apps for Windows Phone 7.” Again, this…
