Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard users recently found that Skype no longer works on their system: despite upgrading to the latest version they still can’t sign in. We got in touch with the Microsoft-owned company and after two days, we got confirmation that a solution was in the works. “We have a Skype version for Mac OS X 10.5 users which will soon be available for download,” a Skype spokesperson told TNW. This is all part of a much broader issue, which has also affected Windows Phone 7 users. Here’s an excerpt from yesterday’s story: In June, Skype announced plans…

SlideShare

This post originally appeared on the Buffer blog. One of my favorite visual social networks—and one that probably flies under the radar compared to other visual spots—is SlideShare. Browse through the featured slidedecks, and you can find big ideas and helpful strategies condensed into a couple dozen simple, succinct slides. There are few better ways to consume killer content so quickly. In writing about how to create a SlideShare presentation that gets results, I ran across a number of presentations that inspired me, educated me, and wowed me. There’s a lot of great stuff out there! I thought it might be apt to highlight a…

Facebook today revealed details about Autoscale, a system for power-efficient load balancing that has been rolled out to production clusters in its data centers. The company says it has “demonstrated significant energy savings.” For those who don’t know, load balancing refers to distributing workloads across multiple computing resources, in this case servers. The goal is to optimize resource use, which can mean different things depending on the task at hand. In short, Facebook has switched its load-balancing policy from a modified round-robin algorithm (every server receives roughly the same number of page requests and utilizes roughly the same amount of…

Sky is bolstering its claim as the premier destination for sport in the UK by revamping its Sky Sports website, apps and catch-up TV services. Sky had previously announced a revamped news channel, called Sky Sports News HQ, and Sky Sports 5, which will show European football; both are set to launch on August 12. Today, the broadcaster revealed that it’s also giving skysports.com a major redesign, with Sky Sports 5 as a streaming channel and live polls that will feed into the coverage provided by Sky Sports News HQ. Sky Sports Live Football Score Centre, a popular iOS and…

How a community is born: The rise of Polish startups

Warsaw, Poland

Borys Musielak is the founder and CEO of Filmaster. When we raised a seed round for Filmaster from a German fund HackFwd in Spring of 2011, we were one of the first Polish startups to work with a foreign investor. Traditionally, Web companies in Poland were focused on the local market of 40 million people, which seemed big enough to scale their business. Big European and US-based VCs, however, were not impressed. They looked for startups with global ambitions, something the Polish ones lacked. Three years later and Poland has got a number of well-funded startups disrupting global markets. What…
