Product Hunt

Product Hunt, the increasingly popular website that helps you discover new apps and services, is about to grow its presence on the Web after it began allowing other services to plug into its treasure trove of information. Founder Ryan Hoover last month announced plans for an API, which allows other developers and software makers to build services that make use of Product Hunt’s data. Now the switch has been hit, letting the first services in. We just started giving people access to the @ProductHunt API. >100 requests/minute on avg and climbing. pic.twitter.com/G0woWAlMZw — Ryan Hoover (@rrhoover) August 17, 2014 Here are 11…

What Aereo should do to stay alive and innovate the TV industry

aereo office

Most great businesses need to go though a moment of snatching victory from the jaw of defeat. Apple lost the PC race, only to innovate and win with portable music players and then phones over the last decade. Intel’s main business was selling RAM chips in the 80s until they rapidly lost market-share and pivoted to focus on commercial microprocessors as the age of the PCs started booming. Aereo can turn the fame it gained from its lost Supreme Court case into a vibrant (and legal!) business by becoming a hardware company. Earlier in the summer, the Supreme Court of…

Exploring a new place? Moovit now provides trip information as you ride public transport.

Moovit, an app we’ve written about a few times which aims to become the ‘Waze for public transit,’ just got a major update that provides live information when you are actually using public transport. ‘Start Ride’ mode will provide your estimated time of arrival throughout, and will let you know when you approach your final destination. That’s a very useful feature if you are visiting a city, or navigating a new area for the first time. The app, which has 8 million downloads to date, also lets you share your progress with friends via Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. The service now covers 400…

Twitter’s latest experiment turns favorites into retweets (and it’s annoying lots of people)

Twitter

Twitter is back in experimental mode, but its latest test is annoying people. A sizable number of users are seeing tweets favorited by others in their timeline, just like retweets. They are also getting notifications when others follow someone new. This was first brought to my attention a couple of weeks ago, but Twitter appears to have widened the experiment to cover more users over the past few days. TNW’s own editor-in-chief Martin Bryant, Re/Code’s Peter Kafka and prominent US investor Hunter Walk are among those seeing these notifications. Twitter filling my feed with stuff I didn’t ask for – stuff other people follow and fav. pic.twitter.com/IVOViGF1QW — Peter Kafka…

education

Ariel Rosenthal is a co-founder at Xprt, a new startup looking to save people the hassle and the headache of doing extensive research before buying a product. I don’t know if you ever experienced a eureka moment – a second when everything comes together and an amazing idea pops into your head. As someone who is in the business of creating new things and has seen various ideas blossom into fully functional products, I can tell you that there is nothing like that feeling. You get excited, you can’t sleep, and you start imagining how the future is going to look. It is very…
