Tips on restaurants and stores can be useful ways of getting the most out of your experience, but sometimes they become outdated as time passes. Foursquare announced today on its blog that it is introducing ephemeral tips, allowing you to create time-limited pieces of advice for the places you visit. Now, when you leave a tip in Foursquare, you’ll see a clock symbol with the word “Forever” in the bottom left hand corner of the app. Once you tap on it, you can change the amount of time the tip will be useful for, including the ability to set specific dates…

Automattic has acquired the BruteProtect plugin for protecting against malicious attacks to your WordPress installation. The company plans to build  the plugin into its Jetpack suite. BruteProtect will remain available for now while the team works on the integration. Automatic has also turned BruteProtect’s premium service, which used to cost $5 a month, into a free offering for all users. Once the technology has been fully implemented into Jetpack, BruteProtect will notify users in advance before it  disables the plugin. Interestingly, BruteProtect founder Sam Hotchkiss revealed that he built the first version of the tool in an 18-hour coding session…

Along with the launch of 32-bit Chrome 37, Google today also released the 64-bit version of Chrome for Windows 7 and Windows 8 in the stable channel. Nevertheless, going 64-bit is still an opt-in process: to take advantage you have to hit the new “Windows 64-bit” download link over at google.com/chrome. Google first launched Chrome 64-bit back in June, but only in the browser’s Dev and Canary channels. The beta channel received the same treatment in July, and now it’s finally available in the stable channel. Google has found that the native 64-bit version has improved speed on many of…

Instagram hopes to launch Hyperlapse for Android ‘soon’ despite low-level APIs not available on the platform

Facebook’s Instagram today released Hyperlapse for iOS, a new mobile app that lets iPhone owners record tracking shots and time-lapse videos. The app isn’t launching on Google’s mobile platform today (or even later this week) because the necessary APIs simply aren’t available. “Android is an important platform for us, so we really want to bring Hyperlapse to it,” an Instagram spokesperson told TNW. “Unfortunately, the requisite APIs are not currently available on Android. More specifically, low-level APIs to access the gyroscope and camera frames.” When I pushed for a definitive answer, however, here’s the official stance I was given: “we…

Google has announced the acquisition of Zync Render, a scalable computing service for visual effects, and will integrate it with Google Cloud Platform. Zync Render offered movie studios the extra rendering capacity they needed when wrapping up big projects like Star Trek Into Darkness or Looper. Zync says the move to Google will help it achieve lower prices, per-minute billing, better scalability and more host packages. These are some of the movies Zync helped render, as listed on its website: ➤ Zync Render Thumbnail image credit: KIMIHIRO HOSHINO/AFP/GettyImages
