Quotable

"Obama's first televised address to the nation from the Oval Office proved one thing: He is fundamentally transforming America, into a nation of polluted waters and lands, political name calling, and a clear plan to fail everybody, except the enemies of America. And yes, I do believe he loves America. I just think he's a hyphenated-American. To be specific, when it comes to his politics, I believe he's what is known as an idiotic-American." ~ Yasha Harari

Wojtek Borowicz is a community evangelist at Estimote, freelance writer and a strong believer in the Internet of Things. That might sound like a nihilistic newspaper headline from the day before Skynet woke up and bombed us, but it’s actually pretty far from that. Leaving more control in the hands of machines is not only something we cannot stop, but something we shouldn’t stop. Soon we’ll have so many connected devices crunching such enormous amounts of data that effective and independent machine-to-machine communication will become essential to sustaining further growth and development of all things digital. Stephen Hawking, a brilliant…

Hands-on with Hyperlapse: Instagram’s fun, easy answer to timelapse videos

Screen-Shot-2014-08-26-at-11.41.15-AM

As mobile video apps get increasingly sophisticated, people don’t just want to record video clips on their iPhone: they want full-on cinematic productions complete with special effects, transitions, stop motion, timelapse and image stabilization. With the new Hyperlapse video app, which hit Apple’s App Store this morning, Instagram combines timelapse effects reminiscent of those built into the iPhone 5s with stabilized motion tracking present in apps like Stupeflix’s Steady and others for a simple, phone-based production workflow. Those words sound more complex than the Hyperlapse procedure used to accomplish it. Instagram has two aims with Hyperlapse: the timelapse video that has become all the…

25 underrated books on persuasion, influence and understanding human behavior

Gregory Ciotti is the marketing director at Help Scout. This post originally appeared on the Helpscout blog. Reading good books remains the supreme “life hack”—knowledge that often took years to assemble can be consumed in mere hours. I can’t think of a single better way to empower your learning (and yourself) than that. And as a professional, executive, or entrepreneur, the more you know about how people tick, the better. The problem is that when looking for new reads, lists are often populated with books that everybody already knows about. How many more recommendations of Cialdini’s Influence do you need before you’re sick…

Bloomberg: Apple is reportedly preparing a 12.9-inch iPad for early 2015

A new report from Bloomberg claims that Apple has a 12.9-inch iPad in the works for early next year. Sources told the publication that Apple had been working with suppliers for the past year and could begin production as soon as the first quarter of 2015. The report also corroborated recent claims that Apple’s next iPhone, expected to be announced September 9, will include 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models. Rumors of a 12.9-inch “pro-level” iPad are nothing new. However, today’s report is noteworthy because it comes from a mainstream outlet and pushes the timing to 2015. Earlier rumors had suggested that the…

Gmail now lets you pin Hangouts contacts and easily see who is online

Google today updated Gmail with a new tab in the built-in Hangouts service that adds two new features. Pinning contacts and an easier view for online contacts will both be rolling out “over the next few days.” You can now pin your favorite contacts to the top of your contact list. After that, friends who are online are shown in the new tab, followed by those who are offline (you can still message your offline friends and they’ll get it when they check their computer, phone, or tablet). In short, it’s now much easier to keep track of your chat…
