Facebook has announced the roll-out of its Privacy Checkup tool, which lets existing users look over their sharing settings to make sure everything’s in order. The expanded feature was originally announced back in May. Users should see a pop-up to go through the process in the next few days. The tool guides you through sharing settings for your posts, connected apps and profile information. If you ever want to re-run Privacy Checkup, you can find it under the Privacy Shortcut option on Facebook’s menu bar. ➤ Privacy Checkup Is Now Rolling Out

With less than a week before the big reveal in Cupertino, The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple will announce a smartwatch that comes in two sizes and supports mobile payments. The wearable (dubbed iWatch by many) is rumored to be announced at Apple’s event on September 9. According to The Wall Street Journal, the device will be available in two sizes (possibly one for men and one for women), will support NFC mobile payments and will be more than just a fitness tracker. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the watch will not be available until 2015 according to “people…

design notes

Bastiaan Janmaat is the CEO DataFox, a predictive intelligence company reinventing the way investors, analysts, and business development professionals research and track technology companies. This article was co-written with Mike Dorsey, DataFox’s Head of Product. Time is often the scarcest resource for a startup. When you’re building a complex technology, how do you prioritize between laying the foundation (the back end) and packaging it delightfully (the front end)? How do you quickly define what you are building next and make sure that everyone is on the same page? We faced this dilemma recently and reached out to the design team at Google Ventures (our…

Google unveils Cartographer, its backpack setup for making indoor maps

Google today offered details on the backpack it uses for creating maps of indoor locations. Dubbed Cartographer, the setup utilizes Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technology to plot out the floor plan of a venue. Similar to Google’s Trekker Street View backpacks for outdoors, Cartographer requires the wearer to walk through the space. Along the way, points of interest can be inputted to an Android tablet that communicates with the backpack’s computer. With today’s announcement, Google has released six indoor maps that were created using Cartographer. ➤ Making of Maps: The cornerstones [Google LatLong] Image credits: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images, Google

Transaction service PayPal has introduced its own SDK today to support its PayPal Here mobile payment system and to help merchants supercharge their transactions and back-end while using the payment service. According to PayPal, the new SDK for the PayPal Here card reader has an easy to use API that allows developers to integrate the payment system into other areas of a business, including other payment systems like merchant traditional POS (point of sale) systems that use a card swiper. The system also integrates with the back-end of a merchant’s business by working with a merchant’s inventory and invoicing systems while helping manage CRM (customer…
