Highfive-device-w-hand

Even with technological advances in other aspects of our lives, business meetings have remained frustratingly antiquated. Conference calls, which often still take place over traditional landlines, are spent talking over each other, while the first chunk of in-person meetings is wasted trying to get our laptops working with the TV or projector. The newly-launched Highfive has reimagined the whole experience and come up with a hardware/cloud service solution that takes much of the pain out of it. Highfive set out to solve two separate, but often overlapping, problems: face-to-face meetings in a conference room and remote meetings. Highfive’s hardware is…

CyArk is digitally documenting World Heritage Sites in 3D with a little help from Microsoft

CyArk, a nonprofit organization that’s setting out to create a digital archive of the world’s heritage sites, has gained a valuable ally in the form of Microsoft. Microsoft has partnered with CyArk to build an all-new online portal to showcase the planet’s treasures. CyArk is looking to digitally document 500 heritage sites within five years, creating detailed (to the half-inch) 3D models of a myriad of locations around the world. The new site taps “advanced hardware acceleration and WebGL,” which basically helps bring powerful 3D capabilities to the browser. From Microsoft’s perspective, this move represents part of its Rethink campaign,…

Nintendo will release its first set of video game Amiibo toys on November 21 in the US, before rolling out them across Europe on November 28. A second wave will arrive in December. The detailed miniatures are fitted with near field communication (NFC) chips, which means players can use them to influence any Amiibo-supported video game on their Nintendo Wii U or Nintendo 3DS consoles. The concept is reminiscent of Disney Infinity and the Activision-owned Skylanders franchise. The toys and video games are sold in parallel, with each incentivizing the other. To expand the scope of the game, players are encouraged…

One year after Tesco entered the tablet fray with an own-brand tablet called Hudl, the British supermarket giant officially unveiled the much-anticipated follow-up on Friday. While our first impressions were largely positive, we spent a little more time with the device over the weekend, so we can now take a deeper dive into the finer nuances of the tablet. One year on, has the Hudl sprouted a beard or gotten itself some funky sideburns? Thankfully no. But it has grown a little, and it’s a little wiser to boot. If looks could kill Before we look at the internal workings…

Amazon is having its tax payments probed by the EU

Hot on the heels of Apple’s tax woes in Europe, news has emerged that Amazon is next in the firing line for the European Commission (EC). As the Financial Times first reported, the EC is preparing to launch a probe into allegations that Luxembourg, where Amazon’s EU headquarters is based, enabled the e-commerce giant to illegally benefit from state subsidies. The FT said: “Investigators believe Luxembourg gave Amazon favourable terms in a 2003 tax ruling, which caps its tax exposure to the Grand Duchy and helps limit its overall bill to less than 1 per cent of the retailer’s European…
