When you have a site called Hacker News that’s a destination for developers, startups and anyone interested in the startup world, it only only makes sense to have an API. Today the Y Combinator run Hacker News site announced its own API so developers will no longer have to scrape the site for information. The API is read-only for now, but the YC-backed site could enable to private per-user info using OAuth in the future. Y Combinator explained why it has created an API for its news site: Most importantly, the reason we released an API is so that we…

Squarespace today announced its first major platform update in two years: Squarespace 7, adding new splash pages, templates and integrations with Getty Images and Google Apps. The release advances the completely rebuilt codebase that arrived with the release of Squarespace 6 in 2012. Squarespace 7 will become available in waves to customers starting tonight. Customers can opt-in to the platform, or choose to hold off on upgrading during the early transition. Today’s launch also includes the official release of Squarespace’s Blog and Note Android apps, which emerged in public beta last month. John Collins is the managing editor of InsideIntercom, the blog from Intercom focused on design, customer experience, start-ups, and the business of software. He was previously an editor and reporter for the Irish Times. This article was originally published on InsideIntercom.  One of my goals since joining Intercom has been to encourage more of the talented engineers, designers, product managers and business execs that work here to write for this blog. To de-mystify the process and hopefully make it easier for them to contribute I drew up a set of principles that inform our writing at Intercom. I’d advise any company that has more…

Twitter wants to be able to share more information about the scope of the US government’s surveillance of Twitter users. Today it filed a lawsuit in federal court to lift the ban on what it can tell users in its transparency reports. The lawsuit contends that squelching what Twitter can say about surveillance requests is unconstitutional under the First Amendment. Currently Twitter is unable to even disclose the amount of FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) and NSL (national security letters) court orders received. In a post today, Twitter explained why it has decided to file the suit: We’ve tried to…

Facebook recently came under fire for its real name policy and how it enforces that policy. Now it looks like the company is exploring another way to interact on its billion-strong social network. The New York Times is reporting that Facebook is working on a mobile app that would allow users to interact anonymously with each other. The publication’s two sources say the app should be released in the “coming weeks.” The app will allegedly allow users to register multiple identities to discuss topics that they wouldn’t want to discuss using their real name.
