Comcast hikes up the price for HD video on ‘unlimited’ plans

Aug01

Comcast-owned Xfinity Mobile will now charge subscribers an additional $20 a month to stream HD video. The change first started about a year ago, when it capped video resolution for mobile subscribers to 480p. Customers, until yesterday, could call in and ask that the limitation be waived at no cost. For Xfinity Mobile subscribers, the bad news doesn’t stop there. The company also plans to remove the 480p streaming cap from its “by the gig” plans, an obvious nudge toward paying for each gigabyte used. In fact, the company dropped the price on these plans, charging customers $30 for 3GB…

Google will help you get aid from 911 without speaking

While we all hope to never be in a situation where we need to call 911, being able to relay the right information to emergency operators is crucial. Unfortunately, sometimes you might be caught in a situation where you can’t actually speak to the operator – perhaps because you’re in immediate danger or your speech is impaired. Google’s new 911 feature is meant to address these situations. Using the speech technology seen on Duplex and the Pixel’s call-screening technology, Google will be able to point the operator to your location and the type of help you need – medical, fire,…

AI researchers developed a fully imaginary keyboard for touchscreens and VR

A trio of researchers from the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) recently developed an eyes-free, AI-powered, invisible keyboard interface that positions itself based on where you choose to set your hands when you’re ready to type. Billions of dollars worth of R&D and marketing research go into building better peripherals every year. But, realistically, little’s changed since the advent of the mouse and keyboard. Touchscreens and virtual keyboards are a fair proxy for mobile users, but there’s no replacement for a full sized QWERTY keyboard you can use all ten fingers on. Various solutions have come along, including…

Streaming superstar Ninja leaves Twitch for Microsoft’s Mixer

Aug01

The world’s biggest game streamer, Fortnite golden boy Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, today revealed his leaping off his heretofore-unstoppable Twitch gravy train in favor of Microsoft‘s Mixer. That’s right, pick your jaw up off the floor — Twitch‘s most well-known attraction is joining the competition. Ninja announced the shift on Twitter earlier today in a mock press conference, saying that he’s streaming on Mixer exclusively full-time, and that he’s getting “back to his roots.” He also said the streams themselves wouldn’t change — so, you know, Fortnite all day, every day. Embodying taller avatars in VR can make us more confident in real life

Aug01

The high immersive capacity of virtual reality is often acknowledged as its main virtue when compared to other media and communication technologies. It is indeed a defining virtue. However, when it comes to the virtue that could really position VR as a powerful positive technology in the market, we have to look at another key feature: avatar embodiment.  Avatars are digital entities that represent users in a virtual world. When we embody an avatar, it becomes our body in virtual reality. We have control over its movements. If we look down, we see the body of our avatar where our real body…
