We have some questions about Microsoft’s ‘Mac Book’ advert

Sometimes, like a soothsayer of shittiness, you know something is terrible before you even see it. And one of those things is Microsoft’s new advert for its Surface 2 laptop. In this… opus, a man literally called Mac (short for Mackenzie) Book talks bollocks about why Microsoft’s machine is superior to its Apple counterpart. I knew it’d be dire, but, little did I know quite how bad it’d be. Hell, It’s so toe-curlingly, wake-up-in-the-night-screaming awful that it’s almost artful. Just watch it: And, like all sensational art, the advert raises some questions. Well, a lot of questions. Here are some of them.…

It seems Google is losing the battle against sketchy Android software big time. The company hosted over 205 harmful apps on the Play store in July only. The kicker: these apps were downloaded over 32 million times in total in the past month alone. The bulk of the suspicious software – 188 to be exact – contained hidden ads, accounting for 19.2 million installs. The rest of the offenders fell under the categories of subscription scam, ad fraud, stalkerware, fake apps, fake antivirus tools, adware droppers, and software with built-in backdoors, according to data compiled by ESET malware researcher Lukas Stefanko.…

Xiaomi’s Mi 9 SE proves good things do come in (slightly) small(er) packages

Over the past few years, I’ve been bouncing from one smartphone review unit to another, so I haven’t bought myself something that I really want. As such, I’ve mostly been stuck with some of the largest handsets on the market, even though I’ve been hankering for something compact. Xiaomi’s Mi 9 SE isn’t the smallest phone on the market (can we get more iPhone SE-sized devices please?), but it does fit more easily in your pocket and your palm than most other phones launched in the past couple of years. It’s also well priced at just $300, boasts a plethora…

Adult content platform SpankChain has launched SpankPay, a cryptocurrency payments platform. As a result, customers will now be able to pay using several cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. The platform also accepts privacy-focused coins such as Zcash and Monero. SpankPay is launching with two partners, which have already integrated the solution: SkyPrivate, Skype-based webcam service and JustFor.Fans, a blogging and market place for adult entertainers. “With SpankPay, we are bringing immediate value to adult merchants by helping them accept crypto [sic], avoid chargebacks, and reach a global audience,” said Ameen Soleimani, SpankChain’s CEO. SpankChain said in a blog post that its new service…

North Korean hacking groups and copycats are going after financial institutions

State-sponsored and criminal actors are mounting a wide array of cyber attacks against the global finance industry with an aim to steal data and sabotage trading systems, according to new research. The report, published by Finnish cybersecurity firm F-Secure, detailed the increasing sophistication of these financially-motivated cyber attacks. With financial institutions becoming a lucrative target because of their socio-economic importance, the attackers are exploiting the threat landscape to commit identify fraud, engage in insider trading, and inflict reputational damage that can run into millions of dollars. “While North Korea is a unique case of a nation-state conducting financially-motivated attacks —…
