AI researchers developed a fully imaginary keyboard for touchscreens and VR

A trio of researchers from the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) recently developed an eyes-free, AI-powered, invisible keyboard interface that positions itself based on where you choose to set your hands when you’re ready to type. Billions of dollars worth of R&D and marketing research go into building better peripherals every year. But, realistically, little’s changed since the advent of the mouse and keyboard. Touchscreens and virtual keyboards are a fair proxy for mobile users, but there’s no replacement for a full sized QWERTY keyboard you can use all ten fingers on. Various solutions have come along, including…

Streaming superstar Ninja leaves Twitch for Microsoft’s Mixer

The world’s biggest game streamer, Fortnite golden boy Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, today revealed his leaping off his heretofore-unstoppable Twitch gravy train in favor of Microsoft‘s Mixer. That’s right, pick your jaw up off the floor — Twitch‘s most well-known attraction is joining the competition. Ninja announced the shift on Twitter earlier today in a mock press conference, saying that he’s streaming on Mixer exclusively full-time, and that he’s getting “back to his roots.” He also said the streams themselves wouldn’t change — so, you know, Fortnite all day, every day. Embodying taller avatars in VR can make us more confident in real life

The high immersive capacity of virtual reality is often acknowledged as its main virtue when compared to other media and communication technologies. It is indeed a defining virtue. However, when it comes to the virtue that could really position VR as a powerful positive technology in the market, we have to look at another key feature: avatar embodiment.  Avatars are digital entities that represent users in a virtual world. When we embody an avatar, it becomes our body in virtual reality. We have control over its movements. If we look down, we see the body of our avatar where our real body…

We have some questions about Microsoft’s ‘Mac Book’ advert

Sometimes, like a soothsayer of shittiness, you know something is terrible before you even see it. And one of those things is Microsoft’s new advert for its Surface 2 laptop. In this… opus, a man literally called Mac (short for Mackenzie) Book talks bollocks about why Microsoft’s machine is superior to its Apple counterpart. I knew it’d be dire, but, little did I know quite how bad it’d be. Hell, It’s so toe-curlingly, wake-up-in-the-night-screaming awful that it’s almost artful. Just watch it: And, like all sensational art, the advert raises some questions. Well, a lot of questions. Here are some of them.…

Google Play hosted 205 harmful apps with over 32M installs last month alone

Aug01

It seems Google is losing the battle against sketchy Android software big time. The company hosted over 205 harmful apps on the Play store in July only. The kicker: these apps were downloaded over 32 million times in total in the past month alone. The bulk of the suspicious software – 188 to be exact – contained hidden ads, accounting for 19.2 million installs. The rest of the offenders fell under the categories of subscription scam, ad fraud, stalkerware, fake apps, fake antivirus tools, adware droppers, and software with built-in backdoors, according to data compiled by ESET malware researcher Lukas Stefanko.…
